William Swift and Mary Ann Lister

Leeds Minster, or the Minster and Parish Church of Saint Peter-at-Leeds

William Swift married Mary Ann Lister (bap. 22 May 1803), daughter of William Lister, on 22 May 1820, when she was 17, both events at Leeds Minster.

William and Mary Ann had at least these ten children:
  1. Eli Swift b. 1820. Died aged 27 hrs and was buried, on 5 Aug 1820, at St Peter, Leeds. The record names the parents as William and Mary Ann. 
  2. Joseph Swift bap. 10 Feb 1822 at Leeds Minster
  3. William Swift bap. 21 Mar 1824 at Leeds Minster
  4. Rebecca Swift b. 1826, died, aged 24, in 1850 M Quarter in KINGSTON UPON HULL Volume 22 Page 295
  5. Asher Swift b. 1827 (Asher is a Hebrew name meaning "happy" and "blessed." It's also a biblical name from the Old Testament.)
  6. Zachariah Swift b. 1829
  7. Mary Ann Swift b. 1832
  8. Ruth Swift b. 24 Mar 1834
  9. Eve Swift b. 1836
  10. Adam Swift b. 1838, bap. 24 Mar 1838 at Holy Trinity, Hull (Hull Minster)
Six children: Rebecca, Ashur (sic), Zachariah, Mary Ann, Ruth and Eve, were all baptised on 11 Sep 1836, at St. James's Church, Lister Street, Hull (demolished in 1957). The family was residing in English Street, Hull at that time.

William Swift (37) died (GRO Reference: 1838 M Quarter in KINGSTON UPON HULL Volume 22 Page 179), and was buried on 4 Feb 1838 at Holy Trinity, Hull.

It was from the later record of youngest son Adam's marriage that we discover his father's occupation was listed as being an Engine Fitter.

In 1841, M A (Mary Ann) Swift (35) Mangle woman, was living in Kirkus Buildings, Humber Dock Street, Hull, with her children: Joseph (19) Engine fitter apprentice, William (17)  Engine fitter apprentice, Rebecca (15), Asia (sic) (14), Zachariah (12), Mary Ann (9), Ruth (7), Eve (5) and Adam (3). Also listed in the household are James Taylor (19), William Smith (40), William George Smith (4), Georgina Smith (30) from Ireland, Richard Stillrich (50) and Elisabeth Stillrich (45).

In 1851, Mary Ann (47) Widow, Mangle Keeper, was living at 7, Sewer Lane, Holy Trinity, Hull, with just youngest son, Adam (13) Tobacconist, still living at home. In the household also were Elizabeth Eley (36), William Eley (11), Elizabeth Eley (5) and William Abram (40) Lodgers. Ruth Swift (17), in 1851, was a House Servant in the household of John Batty (30) Publican, at 61, Myton Gate, Hull. 

In 1871, Mary Ann Swift (68) was a 1, Aberdeen Street, Burley, Headingley, Leeds, in the household of her now married youngest son, Adam.

In 1881, Mary A Swift (78) Annuitant, was living, seemingly alone at 2, Clarence Place, Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

Mary Ann Swift (née Lister) died, aged 80, in 1883 (GRO Reference: 1883 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 127).
