Alfred Sawyer and Emma Rebecca Lee

Grave marker for Alfred and Emma Rebecca Sawyer 'Reunited'

Alfred Sawyer (b. 1877), son of William Arthur Sawyer and Ruth Swift, married Emma Rebecca Lee (b. 15 Nov 1867, bap. 27 Jan 1868 at Holy Trinity Church), daughter of George Lee and Emma Waugh, at St. Paul's Church, Hull, on 16 Aug 1909. Despite being ten years older than her husband, this was the first marriage for both of them. Both gave their address as 70 Brunswick Ave, Hull.

Marrying late, it is no surprise that the couple did not have any children.

In 1911, Alfred Sawyer (33) Furniture Dealer was living at 19 Kimberley Street, Hull with wife Emma Rebecca Sawyer (43). 

In 1921, Alfred Sawyer (43) Salesman at Ed Davies & Coy Ltd Hull Furnishers and Emma Rebecca Sawyer (53) were living at 46, Thoresby Street, Sculcoates.

Alfred Sawyer died, aged 51, on 1 Jan 1929 (M Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 401). The Hull Daily Mail on 2 Jan 1929 reported on the HULL MAN'S SUDDEN DEATH, detailing, "The death occurred on New Year's Day of Alfred Sawyer, 51, of Thoresby Street, Hull, a buyer in the employ of Messrs Edwin Davis & C Ltd, drapers, of Bond Street, Hull. Sawyer was at work up to noon on Tuesday when he complained to the manager of severe pains in his body. He was sent home in a private car and became worse, and died before the arrival of a doctor." 

"SAWYER:- Jan 1st at 46 Thoresby Street, suddenly, Alfred, beloved husband of Emmie Sawyer. Internment Northern Cemetery, Friday, 1 p.m." 

In 1939, Emma Rebecca Sawyer, widow, of private means, was still living at 46 Thoresby Street, Kingston Upon Hull, with two single females in the household: Louise Rudolph a Domestic Servant and Jane Thompson, a Companion Help.

Emma Rebecca Sawyer of 46 Thoresby Street, Kingston Upon Hull, died, aged 83, on 20 May 1951 and is buried at the Northern Cemetery, Kingston Upon Hull, along with her husband. She left her estate to George Lee, electrician.
