Across the road from the former churchyard of St Peter's, Drypool, the Victoria Dock Tavern. Opened by local brewer, Simon Cook, late 1820s, as the Albion, a famous sailing ship of its day. Its name was changed in the 1840s to reflect the construction of Victoria Dock.

John Travis (b. 26 Aug 1816 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire), by trade a Turner, son of George Travis and Charlotte Tall, married Mary Markham, daughter of Joseph Markham and Sarah Dawson, on 2 Oct 1841 in the Parish of Drypool, St Andrew. Both gave their address as Great Union Street. Although listed as the parish of St Andrew, Drypool, St. Andrew's Church was not consecrated until 1878, so they will have married at the former St Peter's Church, Drypool Green. (Destroyed by bombs in 1941, its shell survived the war, the tower being the last part to be demolished. The churchyard is now a garden.) Witnesses to their marriage were Henry Redmore and Mary's sister, Martha Markham, who themselves married in 1844.

When John's parents married, at All Saints Church, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, on 1 Aug 1815, George Travis was described as 'Labourer of the Parish of Worksop in the County of Nottinghamshire', which explains John's birthplace.

John and Mary Travis had no children of their own.

In 1851, John Travis (34) Labourer from Worksop, Nottinghamshire, was living in Cumberland Street, St Paul, Sculcoates with Mary Travis (29).

In 1861, John Travis (44) and Mary Travis (39) were occupying 150 & 151 Church Street, St Marys Sculcoates. It hasn't been possible to read John's occupation.

In 1871, John Travis (54) Oil Miller was living at 41, Lime Street, Sutton, Sculcoates with Mary Travis (49).

In 1881, John Travis (64) Dock labourer was living at East Side, 37, Grange Street, Sculcoates with Mary Travis (59) Grocer.

John Travis died, at 74, in 1891 M Quarter in SCULCOATES.

In 1891, Mary Travis (69) Widow, Grocer, lived at 78, Grange Street, Sculcoates with Ada M Redmore (18) Dressmaker, Niece. (Great-niece, daughter of James Markham Redmore, elder son of Henry Redmore and Martha Markham.).

Mary Travis, widow of the late John Travis, Oil Refiner, died on 6 Jun 1897 (in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 142), according to the notice published in the Hull Daily Mail. Mary Travis (76) was buried on 9 Jun 1897 in the parish of Sculcoates, All Saints. On the burial record, her abode is listed as Workhouse. Presumably the Sculcoates Union Workhouse, later the Beverley Road Institution and eventually Kingston General Hospital, this was undoubtedly because it was the only place people could then get treatment and care in sickness and old age.
