Thomas Crowley and Emma Gower

Thomas Crowley (b. 1852), son of Thomas Crowley and Elizabeth Molloy, married Emma Gower (bap. 18 Dec 1856), daughter of Daniel Gower and Charlotte Moody, at All Saints Church, Hull (demolished in 1974), on 26 May 1877.

Thomas and Emma had one son, Thomas Crowley, born in the 2nd quarter of 1878, but who died in the 3rd quarter of the same year, in Sculcoates.

In 1881, Thomas Crowley (27) Labourer out of employ and Emma Crowley (24) were living at 58, Church Street, Sculcoates, Yorkshire. 

Thomas Crowley, then of Glasgow Street, Newington, Sculcoates, died, aged just 35 and was buried at Hull Holy Trinity, on 21 Jan 1889. 

In 1891, widow, Emma Gower (33), her occupation listed as "Takes in mangling", was still living in Glasgow Street, with Hannah Crowley (72), widow of Thomas' father, Thomas Crowley, described, curiously, as her aunt. Also living in the household were Lodgers, Christopher Kirby (27) Butler and Rosa Kirby (21).

Emma Crowley (36), Widow, daughter of Daniel Gower, then remarried to William Henry Appleby (bap. 29 Sep 1850), Widower, Sailor, son of Henry Appleby, Master Mariner and Rebecca Wilson, at St Matthew's church, Hull on 14 Dec 1891. 

It's hard to get one's head around, however, checking records we discover ... 

Emma Gower's first husband's father's third wife, Hannah Wilson - therefore her step-mother-in-law, but who was described as her aunt (suggesting an existing blood relationship) - was the sister of her second husband's mother, Rebecca Wilson. (WAY more convoluted than any fictional Soap (TV series) story line!)

William Henry Appleby had previously married his first cousin, Mary Ellen Wilson, daughter of Joseph Wilson (brother of Hannah and Rebecca), at St Barnabas, Hull on 25 Jan 1881. They had two children; Henry Appleby b. 3 Apr 1882 J Qtr in HULL Vol 09D Page 268 and George William Appleby b. 1885 J Qtr in HULL Vol 09D Page 240, bap. 6 May 1886. George William died, aged 2, in 1887 M Qtr in HULL Vol 09D Page 196. Mary Ellen Appleby died, at 37, in 1888. 

In 1891, Henry Appleby (9) had been living with his grandmother, Rebecca Postill (69) Widow*, at 10, Hetty's Terrace, Holy Trinity.

* Born Rebecca Wilson, she had originally married Henry Appleby, in Sculcoates on 23 Nov 1840. In 1851, Rebecca Appleby (29) Sailor's Wife was living at 8, Union Square Edward Place, Sculcoates with son William H Appleby (0). Henry Appleby was presumably at sea. I haven't found a record of Henry Appleby's death, however, Rebecca Appleby, then 45, remarried to Thomas Stork, in Hull, in Q3 of 1867. Thomas Stork died, at 35, in 1870. So Rebecca Stork (56), daughter of Joseph Wilson, married for a third time, at Hull, St Barnabas on 5 Sep 1877, to a Francis Postill (58). This must have been all too much for him, however, as Francis Postill was buried, only a few weeks later on 26 Oct 1877, at Hull Holy Trinity.

William Henry and Emma Appleby then added four children:

4. Leslie Appleby b. 6 Aug 1901 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Vol 09D 189

The first three births correctly list the mother's maiden name as GOWER. On Leslie's it is listed wrongly, but usefully, as CROWLEY (Depends whether 'maiden' or 'former' name was asked for). The baptisms give their address as 99 Glasgow Street, Sculcoates and William Henry's occupation as Marine Fireman.

In 1901, Emma Appleby (46) Married, was living at 99, Glasgow Street, Sculcoates, with Alfred Appleby (8), Olive Appleby (5), William Appleby (2) and Rebecca Postill (80) Widow, who was her mother-in-law, William Henry's mother.

In 1911, at 34 Barmston St, Hull, were Emma Appleby (55) Married (William Henry presumably again at sea); Alfred Appleby (18) Feed cake mill stower; Olive Appleby (15) General domestic servant; William Appleby (12) and Leslie Appleby (9).

In 1916, Alfred Appleby enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment, 8th (Reserve) Battalion. The record shows that he was 23 years and 4 months and 5ft 9in with first 2 fingers on R hand missing (as well as the thumb). Initially, he was passed 'Fit for Labour', but was subsequently discharged on 28 Apr 1916, as 'Not being likely to become an efficient soldier'. He married Kate Joy Leadley in 1918 and they went on to have four children before he died in Hull, on 30 Jan 1933. (He was NOT the Private Alfred Appleby No. 3/21035, of East Yorkshire Regiment, 1st Battalion, b. 1882, son of Ethel Appleby, who was killed in action on 23 July 1916.)

Private William Appleby, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), 2nd/5th Bn, was killed on 20 Jul 1918. From the ROLL OF HONOUR in the local press: APPLEBY - Reported missing July 20th, 1918, now officially reported killed on or since that date, Pte. William Appleby, 52220. 2/5 West Yorks, beloved son of Mr & Mrs Appleby, 3, Lincoln Street, Hull, aged 19. He is buried at Marfaux British Cemetery, Marfaux, Departement de la Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France, PLOT II. A. 2. The family grave at Hedon Road Cemetery, Hedon Road, Hull, also commemorates him. He was undoubtedly killed during the attack on the Ardre Valley July 1918 (Three Days at Marfaux: July 1918).

In 1921, at 3, Lincoln Street, Sculcoates, were William Henry Appleby (70), Emma Appleby (65), Alfred Appleby (28) Greaser Oil Mill; Kate Appleby (26) Daughter-in-law (wife of Alfred Appleby); Leslie Appleby (19) Weighing Assistant for Hull Corporation and Emma Appleby (3) Granddaughter.

William Henry Appleby died on 7 Mar 1924 and is buried at Hedon Road Cemetery.

In 1939, Emma Appleby (b. 29 Nov 1856) widowed, was living at 22 Swann Street, Kingston Upon Hull with her daughter Olive Haswell, widowed and granddaughter, Emma Appleby (b. 4 Jun 1918).

Emma Appleby died on 15 Mar 1943 and is buried at Hedon Road Cemetery.

James Peterken, Edith Sach, Elizabeth Perks & Alice Tummon

James Peterken (b. 21 Nov 1870 in Poplar, Middlesex), son of James Peterken and Mary Gilpin, married Edith Sach (b. 1872 in Rochford, Essex), daughter of John Sach and Eliza Young, at All Saints Church, West Ham on 23 May 1897.

James and Edith had three daughters:

1. Edith Mabel Peterken b. 20 Aug 1898 in WEST HAM Volume 04A Page 105, bap. 20 Nov 1898 at All Saints Church, West Ham.
2. Dorothy Lilian Peterken b. 1901 S Quarter in WEST HAM Vol 04A Page 254
3. Daisy Peterken b. 1902 D Quarter in WEST HAM Vol 04A Page 301

Their address at the time of Edith Mabel's baptism was 15 Walton Rd, Upton Park and James Peterken was employed as a Ship's Fireman.

In 1901, James Peterken (30) Gas Stoker, was at 109 Plashet Lane, Upton Park, with Edith Peterken (27), Edith M Peterken (2) and Lilly R Peterken (2) Niece.

Edith Peterken died, aged 29, also in 1902 D Quarter in WEST HAM Volume 04A Page 136. I think we can guess what the cause or contributing factor to her death was. She was buried at St Mary Magdalene's Church, East Ham on 25 Oct 1902. I've found no further records for the infant Daisy, not even a death.

James Peterken of 140 Howards Rd, Barking, then remarried to Elizabeth Perks, daughter of George Perks, at St Margaret's Church, Barking, on 21 Sep 1903. Elizabeth Perks b. 5 Jul 1882, bap. 26 Jul 1882 at St Mary the Virgin, Plaistow, was the daughter of George Perks, Bricklayer, and Elizabeth Brown.

James and Elizabeth added another five children born in Romford:

In 1911, James Peterken (40) General Labourer in the Chemical Manure industry, was living at 29 Kings Road, Barking, Essex with wife Elizabeth Peterken (28), Mabel (12), Dorothy (9), Elizabeth (6), Rose (5), Florence (2) and James (0).

Elizabeth Peterken, died at 32, in 1914 D Quarter in ROMFORD Volume 04A Page 515 and was buried on 23 Nov 1914 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Ilford.

James Peterken, in 1914-20, is listed under Registry of Shipping and Seamen: Index of First World War Mercantile Marine Medals and the British War Medal, indicating that he had served in the Merchant Marine during World War I.

Next, James Peterken married Alice Gibbs, in Romford, in Q1 of 1918. 

This was also Alice's third marriage. Born Alice Tummon, in Hull on 27 Oct 1883, daughter of William Henry Tummon and Elizabeth Crowley, she was the younger sister of George Tummon, who married Edith Mabel Peterken. Alice Tummon had married Richard Hought (b. 1881), son of Richard Robert Hought and Sarah Jane Staniforth, in Hull, in 1903. They adopted a daughter, Catherine Sherlock (b. 1899), daughter of Walter Sherlock and Olga Lindquest, whose own mother died in 1908. Richard Hought, third hand, died at sea in 1912, when the Steam Trawler 'Stork' was lost whilst fishing in Icelandic waters. Alice Hought then married Ernest Gibbs on 22 Apr 1913 at St Margaret's Church, Barking. (Ernest Gibbs previously married Elizabeth Ellen Knight, in 1897, with whom he had seven children. Elizabeth died in 1911.) Ernest Gibbs also died at sea on 15 Apr 1917.

In 1921, James Peterken (50) Boiler Fireman, employed by De Pass & Co, Guano Merchants, was living at 78, Norman Road, Ilford and the house was overflowing: with Alice Peterken (37) from Hull, Yorkshire; Dorothy Peterken (20), Elizabeth Peterken (16), Rosina Peterken (15), Florence Peterken (12), James Peterken (10), Albert Peterken (8) and step-children: George Gibbs (19), Ellen Gibbs (15) and Edith Gibbs (13), the children of Ernest Gibbs and Elizabeth Ellen Knight. 

In 1939, James Peterken, Chemical Process Worker, Alice Peterken and Albert G Peterken, Chemical Labourer, were living at 78 Norman Road, Redbridge. 

Alice Peterken died, aged 70, in 1954, in Hull, Yorkshire.

James Peterken died, aged 84, in 1955, also in Hull.

William Swift and Mary Ann Lister

Leeds Minster, or the Minster and Parish Church of Saint Peter-at-Leeds

William Swift married Mary Ann Lister (bap. 22 May 1803), daughter of William Lister, on 22 May 1820, when she was 17, both events at Leeds Minster.

William and Mary Ann had at least these ten children:

1. Eli Swift b. 1820. Died aged 27 hrs and was buried, on 5 Aug 1820, at St Peter, Leeds. The record names the parents as William and Mary Ann. 
2. Joseph Swift bap. 10 Feb 1822 at Leeds Minster
3. William Swift bap. 21 Mar 1824 at Leeds Minster
4. Rebecca Swift b. 1826, died, aged 24, in 1850 M Quarter in KINGSTON UPON HULL Volume 22 Page 295
5. Asher Swift b. 1827 (Asher is a Hebrew name meaning "happy" and "blessed." It's also a biblical name from the Old Testament.)
6. Zachariah Swift b. 1829
7. Mary Ann Swift b. 1832
8. Ruth Swift b. 24 Mar 1834
9. Eve Swift b. 1836
10. Adam Swift b. 1838, bap. 24 Mar 1838 at Holy Trinity, Hull (Hull Minster)

Six children: Rebecca, Ashur (sic), Zachariah, Mary Ann, Ruth and Eve, were all baptised on 11 Sep 1836, at St. James's Church, Lister Street, Hull (demolished in 1957). The family was residing in English Street, Hull at that time.

William Swift (37) died (GRO Reference: 1838 M Quarter in KINGSTON UPON HULL Volume 22 Page 179), and was buried on 4 Feb 1838 at Holy Trinity, Hull.

It was from the later record of youngest son Adam's marriage that we discover his father's occupation was listed as being an Engine Fitter.

In 1841, M A (Mary Ann) Swift (35) Mangle woman, was living in Kirkus Buildings, Humber Dock Street, Hull, with her children: Joseph (19) Engine fitter apprentice, William (17)  Engine fitter apprentice, Rebecca (15), Asia (sic) (14), Zachariah (12), Mary Ann (9), Ruth (7), Eve (5) and Adam (3). Also listed in the household are James Taylor (19), William Smith (40), William George Smith (4), Georgina Smith (30) from Ireland, Richard Stillrich (50) and Elisabeth Stillrich (45).

In 1851, Mary Ann (47) Widow, Mangle Keeper, was living at 7, Sewer Lane, Holy Trinity, Hull, with just youngest son, Adam (13) Tobacconist, still living at home. In the household also were Elizabeth Eley (36), William Eley (11), Elizabeth Eley (5) and William Abram (40) Lodgers. Ruth Swift (17), in 1851, was a House Servant in the household of John Batty (30) Publican, at 61, Myton Gate, Hull. 

In 1871, Mary Ann Swift (68) was a 1, Aberdeen Street, Burley, Headingley, Leeds, in the household of her now married youngest son, Adam.

In 1881, Mary A Swift (78) Annuitant, was living, seemingly alone at 2, Clarence Place, Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

Mary Ann Swift (née Lister) died, aged 80, in 1883 (GRO Reference: 1883 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 127).

William Hobbs and Sarah Magson (née Brydon or Bridon)

William Hobbs (bap. 19 Jun 1819), son of Thomas Hobbs and Hannah Oliver, married Sarah Magson (née Brydon or Bridon) (bap. 18 Apr 1819 in Nunnington, North Yorkshire), daughter of Andrew and Ann Bridon. At the time of her marriage to William Hobbs, in the parish of St Mary, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, on 20 May 1866, Sarah was a widow with five children from her first marriage, as well as two more children that she'd had subsequently, who William Hobbs took on. 

Sarah had previously married William Magson (b. 1810), purportedly on 20 Jul 1842 in Nunnington, Yorkshire (I've not yet seen the record of the marriage). I did find William Magson in the household of Hannah Foxton in Nunnington, in 1841, where he appears to be still single, so the dates and places do fit. William Magson died, aged 42, in 1852 and was buried in Barton Le Street, Yorkshire.

Sarah's blended offspring comprised:

1. Mary Ann Magson b. 1842 S Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 24 Page 367, bap. 7 Aug 1842 at All Saints and St James' Church, Nunnington

On all of the births of the children with William Magson, the mother's maiden name is listed as Bridon. There does not appear to be a civil registration for the sixth child, George, but he's baptised as the son of Sarah Magson, with no father mentioned. On the civil registration for the youngest, Harry, he's registered under Sarah's married name with no mother's maiden name, as an illegitimate birth. 

In 1851, William Magson (40), Sarah Magson (32), Mary Ann Magson (8), John Magson (6), Susanna Magson (5), Elizabeth J Magson (2) and Eliza H Magson (0) were all living in the household of Sarah's widowed father, Andrew Bridon (60). William Hobbs (30) in 1851, still lived in his father's household.

By 1861, the widowed Sarah Magson (42) Agricultural Labourer, was living in Appleton-le-Street with her daughter Eliza (10) and son George (3). That year Mary Ann Magson (19) was a Dairymaid in the very extensive household of Sir William Worsley, 1st Baronet (1792–1879) at Hovingham Hall, Hovingham, North Yorkshire. (Katharine Worsley, Duchess of Kent, was from this line and was born at Hovingham Hall.) Haven't been able to find John; Susanna Magson (15) was a House Servant at Firby, Westow (Firby Hall?) and Elizabeth J Magson (12) was a Nurse Maid in the household of Joseph Wray (34) in Howsham Scrayingham. 

In 1871, William Hobbs (51) Agricultural Labourer, Sarah Hobbs (52) and the two youngest children listed as George Hobbs (13) and Harry Hobbs (8). Both were born, registered and use the surname of Magson in later life, so I don't think this necessarily infers William Hobbs is their father, although he could have been.

In 1881, William Hobbs (61) Farm labourer and his wife Sarah Hobbs (62) are still living in Appleton-le-Street and staying with them was Sarah's granddaughter, Ada Magson (8), her son John's child. (Ada Magson, born in Scarborough in 1872, mother's maiden name is Patrick. John Magson had married Dinah Patrick in Scarborough on 5 Nov 1867.) Harry Magson (18) was staying with William Hobbs' widowed mother, Hannah Hobbs at the Public House in Appleton-le-Street.

Then in 1891, William Hobbs (71) Farmer and Publican at the New Inn, Spaunton, Yorkshire with wife Sarah (72), Harry Hobbs (28) listed as son; Alfred Lonsborough (16) grandson (son of Eliza who had married George Lownsbrough in 1867) and Georgiana B Magson (4) granddaughter (daughter of George Magson and his wife Julia Hayward.) It is quite a change in fortunes to move up to being a farmer and publican (as had been his father), from previously being just an agricultural labourer. His father, Thomas, died in 1877, and probate was granted - to his mother, Hannah - in 1886. Then Hannah died in 1887. The timing of this advance leads me to think that William has inherited his mother's estate. But that, in itself, raises questions: as second son, if William inherited, is this simply because he's the eldest legitimate, or does this call his older brother's parentage into question?

Sarah Hobbs died, aged 79 in 1899 M Quarter in PICKERING Volume 09D Page 291 and William Hobbs died, aged 80, in 1900 J Quarter in PICKERING Volume 09D Page 303.

Thomas Crowley and Mary Ann Wood

Thomas Crowley married Mary Ann Wood, on 8 May 1808 at the church of St Mary Lowgate. Unfortunately, there's no indication on these early records of who their parents might have been and no baptism records early enough to go further.

The following records exist for children of Thomas and Mary Ann Crowley:

1. Mary Ann Crowley bap. 27 Feb 1809 at St Mary Lowgate, buried on 2 Apr 1809 at Drypool, St Andrew, described as daughter of Thomas Crowley.
2. Thomas Crowley bap. 25 Dec 1812 at Hull Holy Trinity
3. Ann Crowley bap. 14 Jun 1814 at St Mary Lowgate
4. Mary Crowley bap. 13 Mar 1816 at St Mary Lowgate
5. Charles Crowley bap. 27 Nov 1817 at Hull Holy Trinity
6. Sarah Crowley b. 26 Jun 1819, bap. 19 Jul 1819 at St Mary Lowgate (assume died as infant as there are no further records, but name used again.)
7. William Crowley bap. 31 May 1821 at Hull Holy Trinity
8. Sarah Elizabeth Crowley b. 22 Jan 1823, bap. 31 Mar 1823 
9. Frances Emma Crowley b. 26 May 1827, bap. 31 Dec 1830

The final three baptisms also took place at Hull Holy Trinity.

On the baptisms from 1814 to 1819, Thomas Crowley is described as a Grocer in Lowgate. Then on those in 1821 and 1830, a Grocer in Myton [Street].

On son Thomas' marriage in 1858, he describes his father as a Corn Factor and on his third marriage in 1869, as a Merchant (deceased). On their marriages, Ann Crowley and Margaret Wood Crowley, both describe their father as a Grocer.

In Jan 1834, Thomas Crowley was sentenced at Hull to 7 years [imprisonment] for receiving stolen goods. Remarks on his character read, "Bad. Convicted before."

In 1841, Mary Crowley (50) Lace worker, was living in George's Place, Cumberland Street, Sculcoates - no sign of her husband - with son Thomas (25) Groom; Charles (20) Painter; Sarah (26), Frances (14), Margaret (11) and Elizabeth Crowley (20) wife of Thomas Crowley. William Crowley (20) Painter was lodging or boarding in the household of a George Reynard, in York Street, Sculcoates.

In 1851, Mary A Crowley (62) Sempstress (another term for seamstress), widow (I've found no record of Thomas Crowley's death), was living at 3, Raywell Street, Ann's Place, Sculcoates, with daughter Margaret Crowley (24) Lace worker.

In 1861, Mary A Crowley (72) widow, was living in the household of her son Charles at Harritt Buildings, 5, Marlbro Crescent, St Pauls, Sculcoates.

Mary Ann Crowley died, aged 75, and was buried on 14 Dec 1864.

William Mitchinson Hewitt and Eve Swift

William Mitchinson Hewitt married Eve Swift (23), youngest daughter of William Swift and Mary Ann Lister, at Holy Trinity Church, Hull on 22 Apr 1859. On the record of the marriage, William, a Moulder, who gave his age as 24, listed his father as the late William Mitchinson Hewitt, Mariner. Eve Swift's father is correctly listed as the late William Swift, Engineer. Both William and Eve gave their address as Sewer Lane, Hull. Witnesses were a Thomas Leighton and Mary Eyre. 

There is no birth registration, nor baptism, for a William Mitchinson Hewitt anywhere, at any time in history, ever, let alone around the correct date and in Stockton on Tees, so I've been unable to identify his parents or origin. 

William and Eve, nevertheless, had four children:

In 1861 William M Hewitt (24) Iron Moulder from Stockton on Tees, Durham, was living at 1, Canton Place, Sculcoates, Yorkshire with wife Eve Hewitt (25), James W Hewitt is listed as 16, but given the dates of the child's registration and that of the census this must only be 16 DAYS. The original schedule does say he's a Scholar. Either he was a very advanced, genius child, or this was an erroneous assumption on the part of the enumerator. Living with them also was a Thomas Douglas (24) Iron Moulder from Newcastle, listed as William's Brother (step maybe?)

In 1871, William M Hewitt (33) Iron Founder from Durham, Stockton on Tees, was living in Reform Street, Sculcoates with wife Eva Hewitt (35); son James W Hewitt (10) and daughter Minnie Hewitt (1).

In 1881, at 35, Reform Street, Sculcoates, were William M Hewitt (43) Iron Founder from Stockton on Tees, Durham, Eve Hewitt (45), James W Hewitt (20) Plumber & Gas Fitter; Minnie Hewitt (11), Amy Hewitt (9) and Hetty Hewitt (5).

In 1891 and still in Reform Street, Sculcoates, were William M Hewitt (53) Iron Founder from Durham, Stockton with wife Eve Hewitt (54), Amy Hewitt (19) School Teacher and Hetty Hewitt (15) MIlliner's Apprentice.

In 1901, William M Hewitt (63) Iron Founder from Durham was living at 6, Chestnut Avenue, Wellsted Street, Hull with Eve Hewitt (65), daughter Minnie Strawson (31) Board School Teacher; Amy Strawson (4) Granddaughter and Gertrude Hewitt (15) listed as Daughter. Gertrude was the daughter of James William Hewitt. As both her parents had died, in 1893 and 1896, respectively, clearly her grandparents had taken her in as a daughter.

William Mitchinson Hewitt died, aged 66, in 1903 D Quarter in HULL. 

In 1911, Eve Hewitt (75) Widow, was living with her daughter, Minnie Strawson, still at 6, Chestnut Avenue, Wellsted Street, Hull.

Eve Hewitt died, aged 79, in 1915  J Quarter in HULL  Volume 09D  Page 353.

John Newton and Sarah Ann Woodmancy

John Newton, Shipwright, Bachelor, of Scott Street, married Ann Woodmancy, Spinster, of Church Street, at St. Mary's church, Sculcoates on 21 Apr 1840. Very unhelpfully, neither listed their fathers on the marriage record. Research suggests that John was the son of John Newton, Shipwright and his wife Dorothy, bap. 28 Jun 1818 in Sutton on Hull, while Ann, born Sarah Ann Woodmancy, bap. 2 May 1820 in the parish of St Andrew, Drypool (at that date in St. Peter's Church), was the daughter of Samuel Woodmancy and Sarah Linward. (Samuel Woodmancy had died, aged 41, in 1838, but that's not a valid reason for omitting to list him.)

John and Ann Newton had four children:

2. Henry Newton b. 1844 M Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 22 Page 548, bap. 3 Mar 1844 in the parish of Drypool. Died aged 8 in 1852 M Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 09D Page 80 and was buried on 17 Mar 1852 in Sutton on Hull
3. Ann Elizabeth Newton b. 1855 M Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 105, bap. 3 Jan 1855 at St. Mark's Church, Hull
4. Samuel Newton bap. 22 Dec 1858 at St. Mark's Church, Hull (1859 M Qtr in SCULCOATES 519 Vol 09D Page 107). Died, aged 8, in 1867 J Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 09D  Page 77, buried 21 Apr 1867, in Sutton on Hull

The mother's maiden name is listed as WOODMANCY on all of the GRO birth registrations. The baptisms list them as the children of John and Ann; on the first three John's occupation is listed as Shipwright and on Samuel's as Carpenter.

In 1841, John Newton (20) Carpenter; Ann Newton (20) and William Newton (1) were living in the household of Maria Allcrow, Lodging House Keeper in Nelson Street, Sutton, Sculcoates, which is close to the waterside of the Humber.

John Newton's Merchant Seaman's Register Ticket, issued in Hull on 22 Jul 1846, lists his date of birth as 28 May 1819 - this, I think, is a year out. He's described as being 5ft 5in, with brown hair, a fresh complexion and brown eyes. He had a cut on the forehead. He first went to sea in 1841 and was employed as a Carpenter.

In 1851, John Newton (33) Carpenter was living in Howe Street, Sutton, Sculcoates with Ann Newton (31), William Newton (11) and Henry Newton (7).

In 1861, John Newton (42) Shipwright, was living at 12, New George Street, Sculcoates with Ann Newton (40), Annie Newton (6) and Samuel Newton (2).

In 1871, John Newton (52) Shipwright was living at 17 Clyde Terrace, Sutton, Sculcoates with Ann Newton (51) and Annie E Newton (17) Dressmaker.

John Newton died, at 62, in 1880 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 163.

In 1881, Sarah Ann Newton (60) Widow, Grocer was living at 1, St Mark Street, Sutton and Stoneferry, Sculcoates (in The Groves). Living with her were her son-in-law and daughter, James Markham Redmore and Anne Elizabeth Newton and their family, as well as Sarah E Leonard (19) Domestic Servant.

In the 3rd quarter of 1882, Sarah Ann Newton remarried to Arton Massey (bap. 16 Jul 1826 in Brantingham & Ellerker, Yorkshire), son of Nathaniel Massey and Jane Arton. This was Arton Massey's third marriage. His first, had been to Emily Harriet Rhodes on 12 Apr 1853, with whom he had one son, William Nathaniel Massey b. 1855 J Quarter in BEVERLEY Volume 09D Page 89. Emily Harriet Massey had died, aged 26, and was buried on 21 Aug 1859 in Brantingham & Ellerker. His second marriage was on 16 May 1861 in Ellerker, Yorkshire to Susannah Smith, Spinster. This marriage produced no issue. Susannah Massey had died, at 62, in 1879.

In 1891, Arton Massey (60ish) Rullyman (a rully, a four-wheeled cart used in the movement of heavy goods. The operator was called a rullyman) was living at 1, St Mark Street, Sutton with Stoneferry, Sculcoates with his now third wife, Sarah A Massey (70) and Ann Taffinder (17) Domestic Servant.

Arton Massey died, at 72, on 27 Oct 1897 SCULCOATES Vol 09D Page 120.

In 1901, Sarah A Massey (80) Mother-in-law, Widow, Retired Grocer, was living in the household of her son-in-law and daughter, James Markham Redmore and Anne Elizabeth Newton, at 16, Brazil Street, Kingston upon Hull.

Sarah Ann Massey died in 1908 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 114, with her age estimated as 84 - she will have been in her 88th year.

• William John Newton, Engineer, son of John Newton, Carpenter, married Mary Alice Hulme, daughter of Daniel Hulme, Whitesmith, at Holy Trinity Hull, on 5 Aug 1860. In 1881 (not found them before or since), William J Newton (40) Grocer and Mary A Newton (40) were living at Corner of Naylors Row, Southcoates. The couple don't appear to have any children. William John Newton died, at 50, in 1890, in Sculcoates.
