William Mitchinson Hewitt and Eve Swift

Holy Trinity Church (Hull Minster), Trinity Square, Kingston upon Hull
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Bernard Sharp - geograph.org.uk/p/5250486

William Mitchinson Hewitt married Eve Swift (23), youngest daughter of William Swift and Mary Ann Lister, at Holy Trinity Church, Hull on 22 Apr 1859. On the record of the marriage, William, a Moulder, who gave his age as 24, listed his father as the late William Mitchinson Hewitt, Mariner. Eve Swift's father is correctly listed as the late William Swift, Engineer. Both William and Eve gave their address as Sewer Lane, Hull. Witnesses were a Thomas Leighton and Mary Eyre.

There is no birth registration, nor baptism, for a William Mitchinson Hewitt anywhere, at any time in history, ever, let alone around the correct date and in Stockton on Tees, so I've been unable to identify his parents or origin.

William and Eve, nevertheless, had four children:
  1. James William Hewitt b. 1861 M Quarter in SCULCOATES Vol 09D Page 152
  2. Minnie Hewitt b. 5 Jul 1869 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 160, bap. 31 Oct 1869 at All Saints Church, Hull
  3. Amy Hewitt b. 27 Sep 1871 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 167, bap. 25 Jan 1883 at Christ Church, Hull. Died, aged 21, in 1892 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 156.
  4. Hetty Hewitt b. 1876 J Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 189
In 1861 William M Hewitt (24) Iron Moulder from Stockton on Tees, Durham, was living at 1, Canton Place, Sculcoates, Yorkshire with wife Eve Hewitt (25), James W Hewitt is listed as 16, but given the dates of the child's registration and that of the census this must only be 16 DAYS. The original schedule does say he's a Scholar. Either he was a very advanced, genius child, or this was an erroneous assumption on the part of the enumerator. Living with them also was a Thomas Douglas (24) Iron Moulder from Newcastle, listed as William's Brother (step maybe?)

In 1871, William M Hewitt (33) Iron Founder from Durham, Stockton on Tees, was living in Reform Street, Sculcoates with wife Eva Hewitt (35); son James W Hewitt (10) and daughter Minnie Hewitt (1).

In 1881, at 35, Reform Street, Sculcoates, were William M Hewitt (43) Iron Founder from Stockton on Tees, Durham, Eve Hewitt (45), James W Hewitt (20) Plumber & Gas Fitter; Minnie Hewitt (11), Amy Hewitt (9) and Hetty Hewitt (5).

In 1891 and still in Reform Street, Sculcoates, were William M Hewitt (53) Iron Founder from Durham, Stockton with wife Eve Hewitt (54), Amy Hewitt (19) School Teacher and Hetty Hewitt (15) MIlliner's Apprentice.

In 1901, William M Hewitt (63) Iron Founder from Durham was living at 6, Chestnut Avenue, Wellsted Street, Hull with Eve Hewitt (65), daughter Minnie Strawson (31) Board School Teacher; Amy Strawson (4) Granddaughter and Gertrude Hewitt (15) listed as Daughter. Gertrude was the daughter of James William Hewitt. As both her parents had died, in 1893 and 1896, respectively, clearly her grandparents had taken her in as a daughter.

William Mitchinson Hewitt died, aged 66, in 1903 D Quarter in HULL.

In 1911, Eve Hewitt (75) Widow, was living with her daughter, Minnie Strawson, still at 6, Chestnut Avenue, Wellsted Street, Hull.

Eve Hewitt died, aged 79, in 1915  J Quarter in HULL  Volume 09D  Page 353.

John Newton and Sarah Ann Woodmancy

Nelson Street, Kingston upon Hull

John Newton, Shipwright, Bachelor, of Scott Street, married Ann Woodmancy, Spinster, of Church Street, at St. Mary's church, Sculcoates on 21 Apr 1840. Very unhelpfully, neither listed their fathers on the marriage record. Research suggests that John was the son of John Newton, Shipwright and his wife Dorothy, bap. 28 Jun 1818 in Sutton on Hull, while Ann, born Sarah Ann Woodmancy, bap. 2 May 1820 in the parish of St Andrew, Drypool (at that date in St. Peter's Church), was the daughter of Samuel Woodmancy and Sarah Linward. (Samuel Woodmancy had died, aged 41, in 1838, but that's not a valid reason for omitting to list him.)

John and Ann Newton had four children:
  1. William John Newton b. 1840 D Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 22 Page 485, bap. 18 Oct 1840 in the parish of Drypool
  2. Henry Newton b. 1844 M Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 22 Page 548, bap. 3 Mar 1844 in the parish of Drypool. Died aged 8 in 1852 M Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 09D Page 80 and was buried on 17 Mar 1852 in Sutton on Hull
  3. Ann Elizabeth Newton b. 1855 M Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 105, bap. 3 Jan 1855 at St. Mark's Church, Hull
  4. Samuel Newton bap. 22 Dec 1858 at St. Mark's Church, Hull (1859 M Qtr in SCULCOATES 519 Vol 09D Page 107). Died, aged 8, in 1867 J Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 09D  Page 77, buried 21 Apr 1867, in Sutton on Hull
The mother's maiden name is listed as WOODMANCY on all of the GRO birth registrations. The baptisms list them as the children of John and Ann; on the first three John's occupation is listed as Shipwright and on Samuel's as Carpenter.

In 1841, John Newton (20) Carpenter; Ann Newton (20) and William Newton (1) were living in the household of Maria Allcrow, Lodging House Keeper in Nelson Street, Sutton, Sculcoates, which is close to the waterside of the Humber.

John Newton's Merchant Seaman's Register Ticket, issued in Hull on 22 Jul 1846, lists his date of birth as 28 May 1819 - this, I think, is a year out. He's described as being 5ft 5in, with brown hair, a fresh complexion and brown eyes. He had a cut on the forehead. He first went to sea in 1841 and was employed as a Carpenter.

In 1851, John Newton (33) Carpenter was living in Howe Street, Sutton, Sculcoates with Ann Newton (31), William Newton (11) and Henry Newton (7).

In 1861, John Newton (42) Shipwright, was living at 12, New George Street, Sculcoates with Ann Newton (40), Annie Newton (6) and Samuel Newton (2).

In 1871, John Newton (52) Shipwright was living at 17 Clyde Terrace, Sutton, Sculcoates with Ann Newton (51) and Annie E Newton (17) Dressmaker.

John Newton died, at 62, in 1880 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 163.

In 1881, Sarah Ann Newton (60) Widow, Grocer was living at 1, St Mark Street, Sutton and Stoneferry, Sculcoates (in The Groves). Living with her were her son-in-law and daughter, James Markham Redmore and Anne Elizabeth Newton and their family, as well as Sarah E Leonard (19) Domestic Servant.

In the 3rd quarter of 1882, Sarah Ann Newton remarried to Arton Massey (bap. 16 Jul 1826 in Brantingham & Ellerker, Yorkshire), son of Nathaniel Massey and Jane Arton. This was Arton Massey's third marriage. His first, had been to Emily Harriet Rhodes on 12 Apr 1853, with whom he had one son, William Nathaniel Massey b. 1855 J Quarter in BEVERLEY Volume 09D Page 89. Emily Harriet Massey had died, aged 26, and was buried on 21 Aug 1859 in Brantingham & Ellerker. His second marriage was on 16 May 1861 in Ellerker, Yorkshire to Susannah Smith, Spinster. This marriage produced no issue. Susannah Massey had died, at 62, in 1879.

In 1891, Arton Massey (60ish) Rullyman (a rully, a four-wheeled cart used in the movement of heavy goods. The operator was called a rullyman) was living at 1, St Mark Street, Sutton with Stoneferry, Sculcoates with his now third wife, Sarah A Massey (70) and Ann Taffinder (17) Domestic Servant.

Arton Massey died, at 72, on 27 Oct 1897 SCULCOATES Vol 09D Page 120.

In 1901, Sarah A Massey (80) Mother-in-law, Widow, Retired Grocer, was living in the household of her son-in-law and daughter, James Markham Redmore and Anne Elizabeth Newton, at 16, Brazil Street, Kingston upon Hull.

Sarah Ann Massey died in 1908 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 114, with her age estimated as 84 - she will have been in her 88th year.

  • William John Newton, Engineer, son of John Newton, Carpenter, married Mary Alice Hulme, daughter of Daniel Hulme, Whitesmith, at Holy Trinity Hull, on 5 Aug 1860. In 1881 (not found them before or since), William J Newton (40) Grocer and Mary A Newton (40) were living at Corner of Naylors Row, Southcoates. The couple don't appear to have any children. William John Newton died, at 50, in 1890, in Sculcoates.

William Thorpe and Mary Ann Walton

St Andrew's Church, Middleton
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Bill Henderson - geograph.org.uk/p/3310914

William Thorpe, Farmer of Beckhouse, son of William Maw Thorpe and Jane Brewster, married Mary Ann Walton, only daughter of John Walton and Betty Oliver, at St Andrew’s ChurchMiddleton, Ryedale on 19 Apr 1860. Witnesses at the wedding were Ralph Walton, bride's brother and Matthew Beal Clerk.

William Thorpe's parents had also married at Middleton - it has Viking Crosses - on 13 Sep 1823. One of at least nine children, William was baptised on 26 Aug 1832 at St Gregory's ChurchCropton. In 1841, William's parents and eight of their children were living with George Thorpe (65) - William's grandfather, presumably - at Cropton Beckhouse, Middleton, Pickering, while the nine year old William was employed as a M.S. (male servant) in the household of William Brewster (40) at Thornton Riseborough, Normanby, Pickering. Brewster being his mother's maiden name, it wasn't difficult to realise that this was his uncle.

Still working for his Uncle William Brewster (55), Farmer of 500 acres employing 5 men in 1851, William Thorpe (19) Farmer, was back at Beck House, Pickering, Yorkshire (while his parents were at Cropton Mill.)

Beckhouse is Beck House Farm, Cropton, Pickering, North Yorkshire and it's interesting that William Thorpe's family farmed here and he later takes it over, as also, in 1851, Thomas Hobbs had been Farmer of 108 acres (employing 1 man) at Beck House [Farm], Cropton. As son of Thomas Hobbs and Hannah Oliver, Thomas Hobbs was Mary Ann Walton's first cousin. There has to be a story behind why the cousin took over part of it and then shortly left.

William and Mary Ann Thorpe had nine children:
  1. John Walton Thorpe b. 3 Dec 1860 D Quarter in PICKERING Vol 09D Page 357, bap. 5 Jan 1861 at St. Laurence's ChurchKirby Misperton.
  2. William Brewster Thorpe b. 1863 M Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 09D Page 368, bap. 15 Mar 1863 at St Andrew's Church, Normanby.
  3. Elizabeth Thorpe b. 1865 S Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 09D Page 372, bap. 27 Aug 1865 at St Andrew's Church, Normanby.
  4. George Thorpe b. 1867 J Quarter in PICKERING Volume 09D Page 385, bap. 30 Jun 1867 at St Gregory's ChurchCropton.
  5. Thomas Oliver Thorpe b. 1869 D Quarter in PICKERING Vol 09D Page 379
  6. Annie Thorpe b. 1871 S Quarter in PICKERING Vol 09D Page 401
  7. Hannah Jane Thorpe b. 1873 S Quarter in PICKERING Vol 09D Page 401
  8. Robert Thorpe b. 1875 D Quarter in PICKERING Vol 09D Page 421
  9. Frances Mary Thorpe b. 1878 S Quarter in PICKERING Vol 09D Page 455
On the baptisms of William and Elizabeth, the family's residence is listed as Low Bottoms [Farm]. By the time of George's baptism in 1867, they were back at Beckhouse. After that, I found no further records of baptisms.

In 1861, William Thorpe (27) Son-in-law, Ann [Mary Ann] (26) Daughter and John Walton Thorpe (0) were listed in the household of Mary Ann's father, John Walton (57) Farmer of 150 acres at Little Barugh Street, Barughs Ambo, Pickering. But, William Thorpe (28) Farmer of 200 acres employing 3 labourers from Cropton, Yorkshire is also listed as the head of the household at Low Bottoms, Thornton Risebrough, Helmsley, Yorkshire, with those 3 Servants: Mark Gains (20) Foreman; George Moody (18) Plough Boy and Mary Coates (25) Dairy Maid. It's certain William Thorpe has been enumerated twice, as head of his own household and as Mary Ann returned to her parents home for the birth of the first child.

In 1871, they are again back at Beck House, Cropton, Pickering, Yorkshire with the household comprising: William Thorpe (38) Farmer, Mary Ann Thorpe (36), John Thorpe (10), William Brewster Thorpe (8), Elizabeth Thorpe (6), George Thorpe (4), Thomas Oliver Thorpe (2) and six Servants: William Lyth (30), William Frier (20), Robert Sollid (16), William Sollid (13), Ann Foster (17) and Hannah Barker (13).

In 1881, at Farm House, East and West Lutton, Driffield, Yorkshire, the household of 20 people included: William Thorpe (48) Farmer of 400 acres (1 labourer 4 servants); Mary Ann Thorpe (46), John William Thorpe [John Walton Thorpe] (20), William Brown Thorpe [William Brewster Thorpe] (18), Elizabeth Thorpe (16), George Thorpe (14), Oliver T Thorpe [Thomas Oliver Thorpe] (12), Ann Thorpe (9), Jennie Thorpe [Hannah Jane Thorpe] (7), Robert Thorpe (5), Francis [Frances Mary] (2) - even managed to change the sex on this last child, who was a daughter, not a son; John Walton (76) Widower, Father-in-law; two domestic servants, Jane Fletcher (20) and Emma Midgeley (14) - both erroneously listed as daughters; four Farm servant in door (love that term, one imagines them ploughing fields inside the house, although, of course, it usually means the single lads who live in the farm, rather than in outside cottages, generally reserved for married employees) William Colley (24), William Paul (17), Robert Coulson (15) and George Triffill (19). Also in the household as Visitors were William Davidson (31) Farmer and Andrew J Davidson (26) Cattle Dealer. (Only Uncle Tom Cobley was missing!)

And then nothing. Every search turns up no further records of the family. They could have moved to a completely new area and be listed as something other than Thorpe. Sons John Walton Thorpe and William Brewster Thorpe have names that are uncommon enough and I can trace them forward, married and with their own families, but the parents and younger children remain, for now, elusive.

John Welburn, Elizabeth Garbutt and Mary Ann Jackson

Holy Trinity Church, King Street, Kingston upon Hull
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Bernard Sharp - geograph.org.uk/p/3368221

John Welburn (b. 1822), son of William Welburn and Elizabeth Hodgson, married Elizabeth Garbutt (b. 1820), of Anlaby Road, listed as daughter of James Garbutt, Jockey, at Holy Trinity Church (Interior), Hull on 18 Apr 1850

Elizabeth Garbutt, bap. 17 Dec 1820 in Norton by Malton, Yorkshire (Norton-on-Derwent), was one of eleven children to James Garbutt and Elizabeth Welburn.

John Welburn lists his address at the time of the marriage as Upper Union Street and his occupation as Mariner. He lists his father as William Welburn, Farmer. Witnesses at the wedding were Thomas Garbutt and Ann English.

Thomas Garbutt, living on the Anlaby Road in 1851, also baptised in Norton, Yorkshire, on 14 Aug 1818, was Elizabeth's brother. Thomas Garbutt married Ann English, also at Hull Holy Trinity, later that same year on 29 Aug 1850.

John and Elizabeth had four children:
  1. Sarah Elizabeth Welburn b. 1851 M Quarter in KINGSTON UPON HULL Volume 22 Page 492
  2. William Garbutt Welburn b. 1853 S Quarter in KINGSTON UPON HULL Volume 09D Page 171
  3. John Welburn b. 1856 D Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 200
  4. Eliza Welburn b. 1859 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 187
Elizabeth Welburn (40) died in 1861 M Quarter in HULL Vol 09D Page 137.

John Welburn, widower, son of William Welburn, claiming to be 31, then remarried, Mary Ann Jackson (30), also at Holy Trinity Hull, on 13 Oct 1862. Mary Ann's father is listed as John Jackson. As yet, I haven't located a baptism for her.

John and Mary Ann added another four children:
  1. Mary Welburn b. 1864 D Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 191, bap. 3 Oct 1864, at West Street Chapel (West Street Primitive Methodist ChapelThe first Primitive Methodist Chapel in Hull). The baptism record gives the family's abode as Regent Street, Holy Trinity and John's occupation as Horn Shaver.
  2. Alfred Welburn b. 1867 M Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 217
  3. Maria Welburn b. 1867 M Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 218
  4. Alice Welburn b. 1869 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 179
Clearly, Alfred and Maria, born in the same quarter, were twins. Unusually for twins at this time, both not only survive infancy, they reach adulthood and both marry.

John and Mary Ann and their family were living in Holy Trinity, Hull, in 1871.

In 1881, John Welburn (59) from Scarbro, Yorkshire, Horn Shaving Maker - if I had to guess, I'd imagine this occupation was related to a horner, a person who made items made out of horn such as knife handles, combs, etc. - was living at 76, Chiltern Street, Newington, Hull. With him were wife Mary Ann (48) from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, Formerly Laundress; Alfred Welburn (14) Errand Boy; Maria Welburn (14) Domestic Servant Unemployed; Alice Welburn (12) Scholar and Emily Welburn (0) Granddaughter - Emily Welburn b. 1880 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09 D Page 179, registration has no mother's maiden name listed, i.e. an illegitimate birth. Her baptism, on 4 Oct 1880, at the church of St Paul, Sculcoates, confirms this and lists her mother as Eliza Welburn, Singlewoman. (Eliza Welburn (22) at that time, was out working as a Domestic Servant to Sarah A Robinson (24) Late Dressmaker from the City of London at 36, Pease Street, Kingston upon Hull.) Eliza's child being in this household definitively links both these families.

From the description of 'Formerly Laundress' in 1881, it might be reasonable to assume that Mary Ann Welburn had become unable to work. And this may be so, as she died, aged 52, in 1885 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 89.

So far, I've been unable to find a record of the death of this John Welburn.

(There is a record of death of a John Welburn, aged 69, in 1889 D Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 210. The burial record for this man, with age rounded to 70 and his occupation listed as Sailor, says he died from Bronchitis on 15 Dec 1889 and was buried on 18 Dec 1889 in Hull Central Cemetery. At that time the gentleman concerned was resident at Hull Workhouse. It is easy to see why, with no other record of a death of a John Welburn around the relevant date, that this had been accepted. However, the burial record also lists an informant, James Welburn. I've found no James Welburn in this family. I have, however, found a record of John Welburn in the 1881 census in Hull, at that time a Dock Labourer, who was born in Barton, Lincolnshire in 1820. And separately, a record for a James Welburn in 1881, who was also born in Barton, Lincolnshire in 1825 (this James died in 1902). Although I cannot find their baptism records, it wouldn't be difficult to accept that these two are connected. It seems, therefore, far more reasonable to believe that the 1889 death is related to this other John Welburn from Lincolnshire.)

William Glew and Jane Clark

Humber keel - many details of their construction suggest that these fat regional wooden workboats were actually close relatives of the Viking long ships.

William Glew (b. 8 Jan 1816 in Crowle, Lincolnshire), Waterman of Wincolmlee, son of John Glew, Waterman, and Hannah Ludlam, married Jane Clark (bap. 15 Feb 1816 at St. Mary's, Sculcoates), of New George Street, daughter of George Clark, Joiner, and Hannah Hardy, on 17 Apr 1838 at St. Mary's, Sculcoates. Witnesses were Wm Taylor and Susannah Clark, who appeared to be Jane's sister.

William and Jane had two sons:

  1. Thomas Glew b. 14 Aug 1839 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 22 Page 492, bap. 1 Sep 1839 in Sculcoates (presumably also at St Mary's)
  2. William Glew b. 1841 J Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 22 Page 500, bap. 30 Jun 1841 also in Sculcoates
The mother's maiden name on both birth registrations was indeed CLARK. William Glew's occupation is described on both baptisms as Sloopman.

In 1841, Jane Glew (25) with Thomas Glew (1) was in the household of her parents at New George Street, Sculcoates. William was not listed and was presumably aboard his vessel. "Seamen on shore on census night were enumerated in the same way as the general public, in the place where they spent that night. There was no provision made for recording seamen at sea on census night." [Source]

In 1851, William Glew (35) Waterman was in the household of George Clark (76) Journeyman joiner and Hannah Clark (76) at 63, New George Street, Sculcoates with Jane Glew (35), Thomas Glew (11) and William Glew (9).

In 1861, William Glew (44) Captain, was aboard the vessel, "Cousin Mary", Keel, then located at Oaks Colliery, Ardsley, Barnsley, South Yorkshire with Jane Glew (44) and Hannah Glew (4) Granddaughter (Thomas' eldest child).

In 1871, William Glew (55) Master; Samuel Barras (58) Widower, Mate; Jane Glew (55) Master's wife and Hannah Glew (13) Master's granddaughter were aboard the vessel, "Sarah, of Hull" at or around Mexborough, Doncaster.

In 1881, William Glew (64) Captain barge was on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal at Thorne, South Yorkshire with William Barron (15) Cabin boy. Jane Glew (65) Waterman's wife, was alone at 34, Charles Square, Sculcoates.

Jane Glew died at 74 in 1890 J Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 09D Page 144.

In 1891, William Glew (75) Widower, Retired keelman was living with George Milner (33) Lighterman, at 2, Trevor Street, Sculcoates, listed as a Lodger, but Milner was his grandson-in-law, married to granddaughter, Hannah.

William Glew died at 78 in 1894 J Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 09D 109.

Arthur William Sawyer and Mary Ann Littlewood

York Terrace, The Esplanade, Sidmouth, Devon
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Ian Capper - geograph.org.uk/p/6058044

Arthur William Sawyer (b. 1863), son of William Arthur Sawyer and Ruth Swift, married Mary Ann Littlewood (b. 10 Apr 1863), daughter of Joseph Littlewood and Jane Leckenby, on 14 Apr 1885, at St. Thomas's Church, Hull (another lost church that was damaged in a Zeppelin raid in the First World War and more severely by bombing in the Second World War. Subsequently demolished.)

Arthur and Mary Ann had five children:

  1. Arthur Edward Sawyer b. 1885 S Quarter in CAISTOR Volume 07A Page 647, bap. 28 Oct 1885 at St Andrew's, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
  2. Etheleen Mary Sawyer b. 1887 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 293, bap. in 1890, in Hull.
  3. Elsie Verna Sawyer b. 1890 D Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 241, bap. in 1890, in Hull. Died in the same 1890 D Quarter in HULL Vol 09D Page 171.
  4. Olive May Sawyer b. 1891 D Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 280, bap. in 1891, in Hull.
  5. Horace Sawyer b. 1893 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 301, bap. 31 May 1893 at St. Luke's Church, Hull. Died in the same quarter of  1893 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 175.
Clearly they were in Hull in 1891, but I haven't found them on that year's census.

In 1901, Arthur W Sawyer (37) Upholsterer, was living in Denman Street, West Derby, Lancashire - described as "an affluent suburb of Liverpool" - with wife Mary A Sawyer (37) from StrensallNorth Yorkshire; Arthur E Sawyer (15) and a John T Bestwich (20) also an Upholsterer from Matlock, Derbyshire, Boarder. That year Etheleen Sawyer (13) was a visitor in the household of Walter Littlewood (35) Schoolmaster from Rochdale, Lancashire at Salisbury Terrace, Wavertree, Lancashire. Presumably, Walter Littlewood was a relative of Mary Ann's. I've not managed to locate Olive May who would have been around 9 or 10.

In 1911, Arthur William Sawyer (46) Upholsterer in the Wicker and Cane Industry was living in Syston, Leicestershire with wife Mary Ann Sawyer (46) Housekeeper, Arthur Edward Sawyer (24) Upholsterer; Etheleen Mary Sawyer (23), Olive May Sawyer (19) Upholstress; Edmund John Timlock (20) Cane Furniture Worker, Boarder and William Alfred Dare (21) Draughtsman from Stepney, London, Visitor.

In 1921, Arthur William Sawyer (58) from Hull, General Upholsterer employed by Saunders House Furnishers, and Mary Ann Sawyer (58) were Boarders in the household of William John Daniell, Blacksmith - whose wife Mabel was the Boarding House Keeper - at 4, The Myrtles, Sidmouth, Devon.

In 1939, they were both living at Snelston, Fortescue Road, Sidmouth, Devon, along with daughter, Olive May and son-in-law, Cyril Bernard Hawes Bloxam.

Mary Ann Sawyer died, aged 85, in Honiton, Devon in  1948.

Arthur William Sawyer died, aged 86, in Honiton, Devon in 1949.

  • Arthur Edward Sawyer married Ellen Elizabeth Snell on 2 Aug 1913 at St Andrew's Church, Leicester. Records in 1915 to 1919 suggest Arthur served in the Army during World War I. I cannot find that this couple had any children. Ellen Elizabeth Sawyer died, aged 50, in Leicester, in 1937. Arthur Edward Sawyer died, at 61, in Leicester, in 1947.
  • Etheleen Mary Sawyer married Sidney Charles Odam, in Syston, Leicestershire on 6 Sep 1922. They appear to have had two sons: Norman Sidney Odam on 15 July 1923 and Roy in 1925, both born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Sidney Charles Odam died at 64, in Leicester, in 1952. Etheleen Mary Odam died in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, in 1975. Norman Sidney Odam died on 20 Jun 2000 and is buried at Weddington (Saint James) Churchyard. Roy Odam died in Atherstone, Warwickshire, in 2013.
  • Olive May Sawyer married Cyril Bernard Hawes Bloxam, in 1917, in Leicester. Joseph Markham and Sarah Dawson

All Saints Church, Winterton
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © David Wright - geograph.org.uk/p/201437

Joseph Markham (bap. 14 Jun 1782 at St Oswald'sAlthorpe), son of Joseph Markham and Ann Caukwell, married Sarah Dawson (bap. 24 Nov 1787 in Winteringham), daughter of George Dawson and Mary Storm, at All Saints ChurchWinterton, Lincolnshire, on 12 Apr 1808. Sarah was of that parish, while Joseph Markham's residence at the time of his marriage was listed as Messingham. Witnesses were George Dawson, Robert Coggan and James Markham.

Joseph and Sarah's children included:
  1. George Markham bap. 4 Jun 1809 in Messingham, Lincolnshire
  2. John Markham bap. 22 Dec 1817 in Drypool, St Andrew *
  3. William Markham died, aged 15W - weeks - and buried 30 Jun 1819 in the parish of Sculcoates, All Saints & St Mary's, son of Joseph and Sarah
  4. Mary Markham bap. 5 Aug 1821 at Drypool, St Andrew *
  5. Martha Markham b. ~1824, bap. 19 Sep 1830 at Drypool, St Andrew *
(With such large gaps, there's every possibility there were more children.)

* Although listed as the parish of St Andrew, St. Andrew's Church was not consecrated until 1878, so these baptisms will have been at the former St Peter's Church, Drypool Green. Destroyed by bombs in 1941, its shell survived the war, the tower being the last part to be demolished. The churchyard is now a garden.

On Mary's baptism, the family's residence is listed as Summers Gangs.

Sarah Markham died at 45 and was buried on 3 Aug 1833 in Sutton on Hull.

Joseph Markham, Widower, Oil Miller, then remarried to Hannah Horsfield, Widow, in the parish of All Saints, Sculcoates on 1 Jan 1838. It would appear that Hannah's first husband was John Horsfield, who had died at approximately aged 40, and was buried on 23 Jun 1832 at Hull Holy Trinity. Hannah was originally from Stainland, West Yorkshire. John and Hannah's daughter, Sarah Ann Horsfield, was born in Halifax, however there is more than one marriage between a John Horsfield and a Hannah, in Halifax (probably the most likely option) and even one in Sculcoates. It has therefore not [yet] been possible to discover Hannah's maiden name.

In 1841, Joseph Markham (55) (wrongly listed as John - was this Hannah getting her husbands' names confused?) Oil Miller, was living in Church Street, Sculcoates with Hannah Markham (50), Sarah Horsfield (15) and Henry Horsfield (14). There was a John Markham (25) Tailor, presumably lodging, in the household of William Addy (30) Fruiterer, in Queen Street, St Mary, Kingston upon Hull; Mary Markham (20) was a F. S. (female servant) in the household of Charles West (35), in North Street, Sculcoates and Martha Markham (15) was a Female Servant in the household of William West (40) Miller, in Church Street, Sculcoates.

In 1851, Joseph Markham (68) Seed crusher, birthplace listed as Burringham, Lincolnshire (residence listed on his baptism in 1782 was Burringham), was living at 58, Church Street, St Paul, Sculcoates, with Hannah Markham (60) and Thomas Jubb (19) Engineer, Lodger.

Joseph Marham, of Church Street, died, at 69, on 14 Jul 1851 (S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 22 Page 362) and was buried at the Sculcoates Sacristy Cemetery, in Sculcoates, All Saints & St Mary's parish on 24 Jul 1851.

In 1861, Hannah Markham (70) Annuitant from Halifax, Yorkshire was living at 13, King Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham.

In 1871, Hannah Markham (81) Widow, Annuitant, Mother-in-law, from Yorkshire, was living in the household of Rogerson Pickering (47) and Sarah A Pickering (48), in Northumberland Street, Bishopwearmouth. (Rogerson Pickering had married Hannah's daughter, Sarah Ann Horsfield, in Sculcoates, in 1845.)

Hannah Markham died, in her 82nd year, in 1872 S Quarter in SUNDERLAND.

Charles Dawson and Ruth Swift Sawyer

Charles Dawson (b. 1869 in Barnsley), son of Charles Dawson and Ann Senior, married Ruth Swift Sawyer (b. 1868 in Hull), daughter of William Arthur Sawyer and Ruth Swift, at St Paul's Church, Sculcoates on 11 April 1891.

Charles and Ruth had nine children:
  1. Hilda Dawson b. 29 Dec 1891, bap. 5 Jun 1892 at St. Philip's, Hull
  2. Charles William Dawson b. 16 Dec 1892 in HOWDEN Vol 09D  Page 91
  3. Mabel Ruth Dawson b. 1 Jan 1894, bap. 27 May 1894 at St. Silas's, Hull
  4. Horace Percival Dawson b. 8 Jan 1895, bap. 7 Jul 1895 at the Church of All SaintsNorth Cave, died aged 3 in 1899 in Howden, Yorkshire.
  5. Cyril Dawson b. 9 May 1896, bap. 2 Aug 1896 at All Saints, North Cave
  6. Wilmot Dawson b. 18 Mar 1898, bap. 6 Jun 1898 at All Saints, North Cave, died aged 18 in 1917 M Quarter in BARNSLEY Volume 09C Page 279
  7. Adeline Beatrice Dawson b. 15 Jun 1902, bap. 5 Oct 1902 at North Cave
  8. Dorothy Dawson bap. 3 Mar 1904 at All Saints, North Cave
  9. Bernard Sawyer Dawson b. 1909 D Quarter in BARNSLEY Volume 09C Page 254, died aged 0 in 1910 J Quarter in BARNSLEY Volume 09C Page 115
Well, I hope I've included all their children. You would think Sawyer was a straightforward surname, but the mother's maiden name on Charles William is listed as LAWYER and on Mabel Ruth, it's SAWZER. These errors are so random, it's therefore impossible to tell if I've covered all potential variations.

In 1901, Charles Dawson (32) Draper's Traveller and Commission Agent, birthplace Jump, South Yorkshire, was living in Church Street, North Cave, with Ruth S Dawson (33), Hilda Dawson (9) born in Hutton Cranswick; Charles W Dawson (8); Mabel R Dawson (7); Cyril Dawson (4) and Wilmot Dawson (3).

In 1911, Charles Dawson (42) had become a Verger and School Caretaker for the Church and Education Authority in Barnsley. Living in the household are Ruth Swift Dawson (43), Charles William Dawson (18) Learner at Shirt Factory; Mabel Ruth Dawson (17); Cyril Dawson (14) Painter's Errand Boy; Wilmot Dawson (13), also a Painter's Errand Boy; Adeline Beatrice Dawson (8) and Dorothy Dawson (7).

In 1921, Charles Dawson (52) Church Verger; Ruth Swift Dawson (53), Charles William Dawson (28) Tram Car Conductor for Sheffield Corporation; Mabel Ruth Dawson (27) Clerk; Cyril Dawson (25) Postman for the G P O; Adeline Beatrice Dawson (18) Telegraphist and Dorothy Dawson (17) Sub Post Office Assistant, were living at 26, Pendeen Road, Sheffield, Ecclesall, Yorkshire.

Charles Dawson died, aged 55, in 1924 Ecclesall Bierlow (Volume 09C Page 371).

Ruth Swift Dawson died in the March quarter of 1950, in Barnsley, at 81.

In the case of Hilda Dawson and Dorothy Dawson, each with only one forename, there are too many records to narrow it down to the relevant ones.

The mother's maiden name on all of the registrations is GLEW.

[1] "In the 1900s, some doctors believed there was a link between teething and sudden infant death syndrome, but this is now widely believed to be incorrect. Further, many misconceptions about the symptoms of teething were held in the past, both by caregivers and by doctors." Teething - University of Leeds

It's clear that Albert Redmore and Alice Redmore, both born and died in the first quarter of 1911, were a pair of fraternal twins. Even now in our own times, twins are five times more likely to die than single babies in their first year of life.

In 1911, living at 1 Kingston Villas, Estcourt Street, were Alfred Redmore (35) Printers Clerk; Esther Redmore (30), Ivy Redmore (8), Annie Elizabeth Redmore (7), John Redmore (4), Lily Redmore (2) and Alfred Redmore (1). Confirms that by 1911 they had 6 children, with 5 living, during then 9 years of marriage.

In 1921, Alfred Redmore (46) Printers Clerk was working for Richard Johnson & Sons (engravers, lithographers, and printers), 40 Lowgate, Hull. Still living at 1 Kingston Villas, Estcourt Street also were Esther Redmore (41), Ivy Redmore (18) Milliner; Annie Elizabeth Redmore (17) Tailoress; Lily Redmore (13), Alfred Redmore (12), Eva Redmore (9), Harry Redmore (7), Doris Redmore (5) and Stanley Redmore (4). Esther Redmore completed and signed the return.

Alfred Redmore of 28 Rowlston Grove, East Hull Estate, died, aged 59, on 8 Jun 1934 (1934 J Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 209), leaving effects of £144 10s 2d (worth £12,700 in 2023) to his widow, Esther Redmore.

In 1939, Esther Redmore was living in the household of son-in-law and daughter, James and Eva Robinson at 59 Mead Street, Ings Road, Kingston Upon Hull. Also living in the household was daughter, Doris Redmore, Domestic Servant.
