William Arthur Sawyer (b. 18 Nov 1798, bap. 20 Nov 1798 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk), son of John Sawyer and Charlotte Manning, married Ann Smith, daughter of Charles Smith and Esther Salter, on 29 Jun 1822 at St Andrew's Church, Gorleston, Suffolk (now Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk).

There are records for five children:
  1. Ann Salter Sawyer bap. 15 Jun 1825 at The Minster Church of St NicholasGreat Yarmouth, Norfolk.
  2. Henrietta Mary Sawyer bap. 15 Sep 1828 at The Minster Church of St NicholasGreat Yarmouth, Norfolk.
  3. Jane Sawyer b. 19 Jul 1832, bap. 22 Jul 1832 at The Minster Church of St NicholasGreat Yarmouth, Norfolk.
  4. William Arthur Sawyer b. 10 Aug 1835, bap. 13 Sep 1835 at The Minster Church of St NicholasGreat Yarmouth, Norfolk.
  5. Margaret Manning Sawyer, b. 1840 D Quarter in GREAT YARMOUTH Vol 13 Page 329 (mother's name SMITH), bap. 20 Apr 1851 in Great Yarmouth.
On the baptisms William Sawyer's occupation is listed as Cordwainer, which makes the distinction that he was a shoemaker who makes new shoes from new leather, as opposed to a cobbler who just repairs them. On Jane and William Arthur's baptisms, their denomination, curiously, is listed as Primitive Methodist and that these are the records of NORFOLK: Yarmouth Tabernacle (Prim. Methodist): Births & Baptisms, but on the originals, it is clearly written that the baptisms were at St Nicholas.

Also on Jane's baptism, her mother is listed as 'Ann Sawyer, otherwise Salter', the latter used as a middle name for eldest child, Ann. We know from the marriage record and from the registration of Margaret's birth that her maiden name was Smith. As we see, Salter was Ann Smith's mother's maiden name.

In 1841, William Sawyer (35) was living in George Street, Great Yarmouth, with wife Ann (35), Ann (15), Henrietta (10), Jane (8), William (6) and Margaret (0).

In 1851, William Sawyer (50), Shoe Maker, and Ann Sawyer (50), birthplace London, were living at 100, Row, St Georges Ward, [Great] Yarmouth, Norfolk, England with Henrietta (22), Jane (18), William (15) and Margaret (10).

Henrietta Sawyer died, age estimated to 22, in 1852 S Quarter in KINGSTON UPON HULL Volume 09D Page 165. This is useful to pin down the timeframe during which the family had must have relocated to Hull.

William Arthur Sawyer died in 1858 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 104 and was buried, on 24 Nov 1858 at All Saints Church, Sculcoates.

In 1861, Ann Sawyer (50) - ten years out - widow, was boarding with her son-in-law, George Holland and eldest daughter, Ann, at 5, Kings Square, Sculcoates. Jane Sawyer (28) was living in Market Place, Kendal, Westmorland with her widowed Aunt (her mother's sister) Mary Taylor, assisting in her grocery business.

In 1871, Ann Sawyer (70) widow, was living with her youngest daughter, Margaret M Wall (30) Widow, School Mistress, at Lumpers Row (School House), Dawley, Madeley, Shropshire. Jane Sawyer (34ish) was still at Market Place House, Kendal, Westmorland with her Aunt, now remarried, Mary Archer.

Ann Sawyer wasn't with any of the immediate family anywhere in 1881, so I'm fairly sure she died in the interim decade. There is a death of an Ann Sawyer, of the right age 75 in 1876, in Warwick, Warwickshire (Q4 Vol 6D Page 299). This is relatively close to the midlands area she was living in with her youngest daughter and my research didn't find any corresponding local woman whose death it could have been instead, so I think it reasonable to believe this may be her.

In 1881, Jane Sawyer (48) Retired grocer was living with her younger sister, Margaret M Wall at School House, Sedgwick, Kendal, Westmorland.

In 1891, Jane Sawyer (58) Living on own means, was staying with her older sister, Ann Salter Holland, in Convent Lane, Holy Trinity and St Mary, Hull.

In 1901, Jane Sawyer (68) from Yarmouth, Norfolk, was living at Bindless Lodge, Milnthorpe, Kendal, Westmorland.

In 1911, still at Bindloss Cottage Homes (Bindloss Cottages, Milnthorpe, an Almshouse Charity), Milnthorpe, Westmorland, was Jane Smith Sawyer (78) from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, listed as 'Occupant of bindloss homes', along with Marion Lamb (64) and Mary Ann Ashburner (55), both listed as Nurse attendant.

Jane Smith Marianne Sawyer died, aged 79, in 1912 J Quarter in KENDAL Volume 10B Page 787. She certainly didn't have those ever increasing second names (obviously, Smith was her mother's maiden name) at baptism, but adding them has proven very useful in locating and confirming the record of her death.

William Arthur Sawyer (20), son of William Sawyer and Ann Smith, married Ruth Swift, daughter of William Swift and Mary Ann Lister, on 21 Aug 1855, at the Parish Church of Kirk Ella. Both were resident in Anlaby. At the time of his marriage, William Arthur Sawyer's occupation was listed as Shoe Maker, as was his father's. Ruth's father is listed as late William Swift, Ingeneer (sic). The church official was obviously better at maths than spelling too! LOL

William and Ruth had 15 children over 26 years, including one pair of twins. Seven of these children, including both twins, sadly, did not survive infancy:

Rebecca Ruth Sawyer (62) died at 70 Brunswick Avenue, Hull, on 17 Sep 1921.

Lavinia Jane Sawyer of 169 Anlaby Road, Kingston-upon-Hull, Spinster died, aged 65, on 1 Oct 1921, leaving her effects to her brother, Harold Sawyer, boot dealer.

Thomas Stocks (b. 1 Nov 1882), son of William Henry Stocks and Eliza Hobbs, married Ethel Sawyer (b. 25 Jan 1881), daughter of William Arthur Sawyer and Ruth Swift, on 27 Jul 1903 in the parish of Sculcoates, St Mary - this will have been in the 18th century parish church, Air Street, demolished in stages between 1916 and 1960s, not St Mary's Church, Sculcoates Lane, 1915-16. Thomas Stocks residence was at the time of the marriage, was in Nicholson Street and Ethel was listed as living in Exchange Street, which crosses Nicholson Street.

William Henry Stocks (b. 4 Jun 1858, in Stettin, Germany, now Szczecin, Poland), son of Frederick and Sophia (Annie) Stock, married Eliza Hobbs (b. 1859), daughter of Thomas Hobbs and Eliza Welburn, on 2 Jan 1881 in at the Fishermen's Church [see video], of St John the Baptist, St George's Road, Newington, Hull. Witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Hobbs and Maria Hobbs (wife of John).

William and Eliza had five children:

  5. William Henry Stocks b. 27 May 1898 J Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 140
The mid-life surprise twins were both baptised, in Hull, on 10 July 1898.

Stanley and William Henry jnr's baptism records confirm that both boys were born on 27 May 1898; their father's occupation as Butcher and the family's address as 8 Newlands Arcade, Hull.

In 1881, the recently married couple, William Stocks (22) Butcher from Stettin, Germany and wife Eliza Stocks (22) were living in her father's household at 1, Little Grafton Street, Newington, Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

In 1891, William H Stocks (32) Butcher from Germany, with wife Eliza Stocks (32), Thomas Stocks (8), Herbert Stocks (6) and Ethel Stocks (5) were all living at Bowes Terrace, Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

There was a mass internment of registered Enemy Alien men aged between 17 and 55 following the sinking of the Lusitania in May 1915, which German-born William Henry Stocks appears to have avoided, literally, by the skin of his teeth. He was 56 at that time. The record for him in this set Britain, Enemy Aliens and Internees, First and Second World Wars, shows he was assessed during the First World War:

STOCKS William H. 60/59. BB wife. 5 ch. Butcher. Classes 5 & 7. Residence interrupted by 2 visits to Australia in all nearly 2 1/2 years: does not know German languages.

I've not found any records to confirm those supposed visits to Australia.

Eliza Stocks (née Hobbs) died, aged 59, in 1918 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 295.

On 2 Aug 1920, William Henry Stocks (62) remarried to Sarah Ethel Forth (b. 30 Mar 1882 known as Ethel), daughter of John Fryer Forth, a Printer with his own business, and Emma Phillipson, at St John's Church, Newland. Witnesses were a Joseph Pearson and Sarah Ethel's sister, Edith Helen Forth (b. 1883).

William Henry Stocks had one daughter by his second wife:

  1. Irene Stocks b. 25 Feb 1924 (Vol 9D Page 440)
In 1921, William Henry Stocks (63) Master Butcher, listed his place of birth as 'Unknown', 'Resident' in the UK and added 'Believed to be Danes'; with Sarah Ethel Stocks (39), William Henry Stocks (23) Studying for Board of Trade Examination; Betsy Ann Hobbs (71) Sister-in-law and Lilian McKenzie (4) Visitor. (Daughter of John McKenzie and Gertrude Elizabeth Forth, Sarah Ethel's younger sister.)

In 1939, William H Stocks, Sarah E Stocks and Irene Stocks, were living at 18 Golf Links Road, Kingston Upon Hull (on the border with Cottingham).

William Henry Stocks was still on the authorities' radar as an Enemy Alien, as he was issued with a certificate declaring that a Tribunal had found him Exempt from internment (presumably on the basis of his age), dated 4 Nov 1939.

William Henry Stocks died, aged 82, on 19 Jul 1940, in Cottingham. Probate was granted on 14 Aug 1940, with beneficiaries being Sarah Ethel Stocks, Rose Adelaide Austin and Herbert Marshall Austin. (Rose Adelaide Forth (b. 1888) was Sarah's younger sister, who married Herbert Marshall Austin, in Hull, in 1916.)

Sarah Ethel Stocks died, in her 89th year, in 1971, in Hull.

  • Herbert Stocks married Ella Murial Wharton, in Hull, in 1910. In 1911, Herbert Stocks (26) Butcher's Assistant and Murial Stocks (22) were listed living in East Sculcoates. Ella Murial Wharton, b. 1888 D Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 204, daughter of James Wharton and Emily Frances Marshall. James Wharton was a Police Constable.
  • Ethel Stocks married George Henry Shaw (b. 1879 in Nottingham), in Sculcoates, in 1911. They had two sons: Cecil Shaw b. 1914 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 226 and George Rowland Shaw b. 1923 J Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 207.
  • Stanley Stocks was awarded a Mercantile Marine Medal, for his participation in World War I, in 1919. He married Jessie Stephenson, in Sculcoates, in 1922. In 1939, Stanley Stocks, Cook Steward, SS Teano, was living at 28 Lambton Street, Kingston Upon Hull. SS Teano sunk on 8 Nov 1943, after being hit by another vessel whilst at anchor on the River Humber. If Stanley was still attached to that ship in 1943, he was clearly one of the survivors. Stanley Stocks died, aged 62, at sea, on 17 Sep 1960 from infarctus myocardii (myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack). It appears he was taken to Sahlgrenska University HospitalGothenburgSweden. At the time of his death, Stanley Stocks, of 6 Lambton Street, Newlands Avenue, Hull, was Chief Steward of the SS Cicero (II), which made a regular run between Hull and Gothenburg. Jessie Stocks died, in Hull, in 1968.
  • William Henry Stocks Jnr, like his twin brother, was also awarded a Mercantile Marine Medal, for his participation in World War I, in 1919. He married Ethel Blanchard on 11 Oct 1924. Immigration records show that William Henry Stocks was 1st Mate of the SS Molesey, arriving in BostonMassachusetts in August 1928 and July 1929. On 25 Nov 1929, the Molesey was lost, ran aground off SkomerJack SoundPembrokeshire. Among the persons lost were Ethel Stocks, Stewardess. (Plan of wreck). William Henry Stocks remarried to Marion Lazenby on 23 Dec 1933. In 1939, William Henry Stocks and Marion Stocks were living at 87 Highfield, Kingston Upon Hull. William Hobbs and Sarah Magson (née Brydon or Bridon)

St Mary's Parish Church, Scarborough, Yorkshire

William Hobbs (bap. 19 Jun 1819), son of Thomas Hobbs and Hannah Oliver, married Sarah Magson (née Brydon or Bridon) (bap. 18 Apr 1819 in Nunnington, North Yorkshire), daughter of Andrew and Ann Bridon. At the time of her marriage to William Hobbs, in the parish of St Mary, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, on 20 May 1866, Sarah was a widow with five children from her first marriage, as well as two more children that she'd had subsequently, who William Hobbs took on.

Sarah had previously married William Magson (b. 1810), purportedly on 20 Jul 1842 in Nunnington, Yorkshire (I've not yet seen the record of the marriage). I did find William Magson in the household of Hannah Foxton in Nunnington, in 1841, where he appears to be still single, so the dates and places do fit. William Magson died, aged 42, in 1852 and was buried in Barton Le Street, Yorkshire.

Sarah's blended offspring comprised:

  1. Mary Ann Magson b. 1842 S Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 24 Page 367, bap. 7 Aug 1842 at All Saints and St James' ChurchNunnington
  2. John Magson b. 1844 S Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 24 Page 417, bap. 23 Jul 1844 at All Saints and St James' ChurchNunnington
  3. Susanna Magson b. 1846 M Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 24 Page 412, bap. 12 Feb 1846 at All Saints and St James' ChurchNunnington
  4. Elizabeth Jane Magson b. 1848 S Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 24 Page 442, bap. 23 July 1848 at All Saints and St James' ChurchNunnington
  5. Eliza Hannah Magson b. 1850 S Quarter in HELMSLEY Volume 24 Page 465, bap. 15 Sep 1850 at All Saints and St James' ChurchNunnington
  6. George Magson bap. 28 Nov 1858 at All Saints Church, Appleton-le-Street
  7. Harry Magson b. 1863 M Quarter in MALTON UNION Volume 09D Page 322.

On all of the births of the children with William Magson, the mother's maiden name is listed as Bridon. There does not appear to be a civil registration for the sixth child, George, but he's baptised as the son of Sarah Magson, with no father mentioned. On the civil registration for the youngest, Harry, he's registered under Sarah's married name with no mother's maiden name, as an illegitimate birth.

In 1851, William Magson (40), Sarah Magson (32), Mary Ann Magson (8), John Magson (6), Susanna Magson (5), Elizabeth J Magson (2) and Eliza H Magson (0) were all living in the household of Sarah's widowed father, Andrew Bridon (60). William Hobbs (30) in 1851, still lived in his father's household.

By 1861, the widowed Sarah Magson (42) Agricultural Labourer, was living in Appleton-le-Street with her daughter Eliza (10) and son George (3). That year Mary Ann Magson (19) was a Dairymaid in the very extensive household of Sir William Worsley, 1st Baronet (1792–1879) at Hovingham HallHovingham, North Yorkshire. (Katharine Worsley, Duchess of Kent, was from this line and was born at Hovingham Hall.) Haven't been able to find John; Susanna Magson (15) was a House Servant at Firby, Westow (Firby Hall?) and Elizabeth J Magson (12) was a Nurse Maid in the household of Joseph Wray (34) in Howsham Scrayingham

In 1871, William Hobbs (51) Agricultural Labourer, Sarah Hobbs (52) and the two youngest children listed as George Hobbs (13) and Harry Hobbs (8). Both were born, registered and use the surname of Magson in later life, so I don't think this necessarily infers William Hobbs is their father, although he could have been.

In 1881, William Hobbs (61) Farm labourer and his wife Sarah Hobbs (62) are still living in Appleton-le-Street and staying with them was Sarah's granddaughter, Ada Magson (8), her son John's child. (Ada Magson, born in Scarborough in 1872, mother's maiden name is Patrick. John Magson had married Dinah Patrick in Scarborough on 5 Nov 1867.) Harry Magson (18) was staying with William Hobbs' widowed mother, Hannah Hobbs at the Public House in Appleton-le-Street.

Then in 1891, William Hobbs (71) Farmer and Publican at the New InnSpaunton, Yorkshire with wife Sarah (72), Harry Hobbs (28) listed as son; Alfred Lonsborough (16) grandson (son of Eliza who had married George Lownsbrough in 1867) and Georgiana B Magson (4) granddaughter (daughter of George Magson and his wife Julia Hayward.) It is quite a change in fortunes to move up to being a farmer and publican (as had been his father), from previously being just an agricultural labourer. His father, Thomas, died in 1877, and probate was granted - to his mother, Hannah - in 1886. Then Hannah died in 1887. The timing of this advance leads me to think that William has inherited his mother's estate. But that, in itself, raises questions: as second son, if William inherited, is this simply because he's the eldest legitimate, or does this call his older brother's parentage into question?

A classic stone-built inn dating back to the 1800s when it was flanked by a blacksmith and a butcher.

Thomas Hobbs married Hannah Oliver, daughter of George Oliver and Mary Hodgson, at All Saints Church, Appleton-le-Street, on 29 Dec 1817

Hannah, who was 19 at the time of the marriage, had been baptised in Appleton-le-Street on 16 Dec 1798, whereas Thomas was consistently listed as being from Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, where he was purportedly born on 8 Apr 1792, although I have yet to see any original record to confirm this. Quite what this apparent southerner was doing this far north also currently remains a mystery.

Almost a year before they married, Thomas and Hannah had a son, who was baptised under the name of Thomas Hobbs Oliver. Once his parents had married, he is listed under the surname of Hobbs and when this son married in 1843, is acknowledged on the record as Thomas Hobbs Jnr. The couple had four sons:
  1. Thomas Hobbs Oliver bap. 15 January 1817, in Appleton-le-Street
  2. William Hobbs bap. 19 Jun 1819 at All Saints Church, Appleton-le-Street
  3. John Hobbs bap. 7 Dec 1828 at All Saints Church, Appleton-le-Street, buried 17 Nov 1831, also at All Saints Church, Appleton-le-Street
  4. John Hobbs bap. 14 Apr 1834 at All Saints Church, Appleton-le-Street, buried 22 Oct 1848, also at All Saints Church, Appleton-le-Street
In 1841, we find Thomas Hobbs (45) Shoemaker in Appleton-Le-Street, Malton, with Hannah Hobbs (40), Thomas Hobbs (20) Farmer, William Hobbs (20) and John Hobbs (7), as well as Harriot Mooring (15) Female Servant,  along with George Reveley (15) and Robert Wilkinson (13), Shoemaker's Apprentices.

In 1851, Thomas Hobbs (57) from Henley-On-Thames, Oxfordshire, is listed as Inn Keeper, Shoemaker & Farmer and it is clear they had taken over the pub from Hannah's father, who had died in 1850. The household consisted: Hannah Hobbs (51) wife, William Hobbs (30) son, Elizabeth Hobbs (6) granddaughter (daughter of son Thomas, who was probably staying with her grandparents then as her mother had just given birth to her sister) and Jane Medcalf (16) House Servant.

In 1861, we find Thomas Hobbs (69) Farmer 29 Acres Public House with Hannah Hobbs (63), William Hobbs (41), Hannah Hobbs (9) granddaughter (again daughter of son Thomas) and Mary Stainsby (13) Kitchen Maid.

In 1871, Thomas Hobbs (78) Farmer, from Henley, Oxfordshire, is confirmed to be at the Cresswell Arms Inn, Appleton-Le-Street, Malton, Yorkshire with Hannah Hobbs (71) and Sarah Suffill (18) Servant from Hovingham, Yorkshire.

The Cresswell Arms, which dates from at least the early 1800's, is also said to have been a 17th century building. The pub was destroyed - devastated after a fire ripped through the building - in 2020 and later ransacked by intruders

Thomas Hobbs died on 31 Aug 1877, aged 85. Probate was granted in 1886, which states that "The Will of Thomas Hobbs late of Appleton-le-Street in the County of York Inkeeper who died 31 August 1877 at Appleton-le-Street was proved at York by Hannah Hobbs of Farfield Howsham in the said County Widow the Relict the sole Executrix." He left a personal estate valued at £235 (around £29K in 2022).

Thomas Paul Hobbs, who died 31 Aug 1877, aged 85, is buried in Appleton-le-Street, and is listed in Yorkshire Monumental Inscriptions. There's a head stone in All Saints Churchyard.

In 1881, the widowed Hannah Hobbs (82) was still running the Public house in Appleton-le-Street with Harry Magson (18) Grandson, Servant (ag lab) - son William's son/stepson - and John Ward (52) Lodger, Farm labourer.

Hannah Hobbs (née Oliver) died on 24 Jul 1887, aged 88. She was also buried in All Saints Churchyard, Appleton-le-Street, along with her late husband.
