Joseph Tummon (bap. 20 Nov 1808 at All Saints Church, Sculcoates), son of Joseph Tummon and Mary Williamson, married Jane Hatcliffe (bap. 18 Mar 1817, in Panton, Lincolnshire), daughter of John Hatcliffe and Elizabeth Bratley, on 29 Aug 1836 at the parish of North Somercotes, Lincolnshire. As with so many earlier records, at best, clerks wrote down what they heard in regional accents: Joseph's surname is listed as Tummins and Jane's as Atcliff with the aitch dropped. :)

Records suggest Joseph and Jane had three children:
  1. Sophia Alice Hatcliffe Tummon b. 1836 in Swinefleet, Yorkshire
  2. William Henry Tummon bap. 7 May 1838 in Marshchapel, Lincolnshire. Their surname on William's baptism was also listed as Tummins.
  3. Thomas Tummon b. 1841 in Marshchapel, Lincolnshire
In 1841, living in Marsh Chapel, Louth, Lincolnshire, were Joseph Tummons (sic) (30), Jane Tummons (20), William Tummons (3) and Sophia Tummons (5). On the 1841 Census, Joseph's occupation is listed as Agricultural Labourer.

Then Joseph Tummon died, at just 42, and was buried on 5 Sep 1849 in the parish of St. AndrewDrypool - then a village - presumably, ironically, in the churchyard of the ancient parish church of St. Peter's Church, Drypool. The building was destroyed by bombs in 1941. The churchyard is now a garden.

In 1851, in Thornton Street, Sculcoates, were Jane Tummon (31ish) widow, Dressmaker; Sophia Alice Tummon (14), William Henry Tummon (13) Weaver; Thomas Tummon (10) and Hugh Millar, a Hawker, Lodger.

In 1871, Jane Tummon (49ish) Seamstress, was living at Winters Alley, St Mary, Hull with Emma Hatcliffe (24) Charwoman, Niece and William Robinson (60) Dock side labourer, Boarder, which suggests he also had meals provided.

Jane Tummon died, aged 53, in the last quarter of 1871.

William Arthur Sawyer and Ruth Swift

St. Andrew's Church, Kirk Ella
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Richard Croft - geograph.org.uk/p/2306399

William Arthur Sawyer (20), son of William Sawyer and Ann Smith, married Ruth Swift, daughter of William Swift and Mary Ann Lister, on 21 Aug 1855, at the Parish Church of Kirk Ella. Both were resident in Anlaby. At the time of his marriage, William Arthur Sawyer's occupation was listed as Shoe Maker, as was his father's. Ruth's father is listed as late William Swift, Ingeneer (sic). The church official was obviously better at maths than spelling too! LOL

William and Ruth had 15 children over 26 years, including one pair of twins. Seven of these children, including both twins, sadly, did not survive infancy:

I've been unable to find any of this family on the Census of 1861.

In 1871, William Arthur Sawyer (35) Post Office Letter Stamper from Yarmouth, Norfolk, was living at Parade, South Anns Buildings, Holy Trinity, Hull, with Ruth Sawyer (37), Lavinia J Sawyer (14) Servant; Rebecca A Sawyer (11); Arthur W Sawyer (7); Mary E Sawyer (5); Ruth S Sawyer (3) and Emmeline Sawyer (1).

In 1881, they were living at 1, Clifton Street, Sculcoates, Yorkshire, where the household comprised: William A Sawyer (45) Letter carrier from Yarmouth, Norfolk; Ruth (47); Rebecca R (21) Dressmaker; Arthur W (17) Apprentice; Mary E (16) Errand Girl; Ruth S (13); Harold (5); Alfred (3) and Ethel (0). In 1891, still in Clifton Street, listed as William Sayer (sic) (55) and employed as a Parkman, with Ruth (57); Rebecca (30) Dressmaker and Ruth S (23) Mother's Help, Harold (15) Wood Carver Apprentice; Alfred (13) and Ethel (10) at school. Lavinia Jane Sawyer (31) Boot & shoe dealer was living on the Anlaby Road, Hull with Clara J Foster (15) Servant. I've been unable to find Mary Ellen (26).

William Arthur Sawyer died on Monday, 15 Jan 1900, at his residence at 93 Belvoir Street, Sculcoates, Yorkshire, aged 64. The newspaper announcement says he was buried at the Western Cemetery on the Thursday [18 Jan 1900] at 2:50 pm.

In 1921, Lavinia Jane Sawyer (64) Boot & Shoe Dealer was at 169, Anlaby Road, Hull. It appears that Mary Ellen Sawyer (56) was Domestic Servant to a Mary Helen Gilpin Brown (56) in Thornton-Le-Dale.

Rebecca Ruth Sawyer (62) died at 70 Brunswick Avenue, Hull, on 17 Sep 1921.

Lavinia Jane Sawyer of 169 Anlaby Road, Kingston-upon-Hull, Spinster died, aged 65, on 1 Oct 1921, leaving her effects to her brother, Harold Sawyer, boot dealer.

John Paddison, Esther Ann Borrell and Mary Ann Maplethorpe

Interior, Hull Holy Trinity, now Hull Minster.

John Paddison and Esther Ann Borrell - the parents of Ann Paddison who later married Charles Stocks, brother of William Henry Stocks - story is so complicated, it was worth writing down, if only to - attempt to - untangle its various turns.

John Paddison married Esther Ann Borrell on 19 Aug 1855 and the marriage was reported in the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury (Published since 1712, this claims to be "Britain's oldest continuously published newspaper") announcing that the marriage of John Paddison of Hallington and Esther Ann Borrell of Market Rasen had taken place at the Wesleyan Reform Chapel, Market Rasen.

Daughter of George Borrell and Esther Ann Newbound, Esther Ann Borrell was baptised on 22 Jan 1827 in North Thoresby, Lincolnshire. She was eight years older than John Paddison (bap. 22 Mar 1835 in South Elkington, Lincolnshire, a village near the town of Louth), son of John Paddison and Ann Malkinson.

When John and Esther married in 1855, this was not her first excursion into matrimony, however. Previously, Esther Ann Borrell, daughter of George Borrell, had married widower, David Hindes (sic), Labourer, on 14 Aug 1849, at Holy Trinity Church, Hull (now Hull Minster). David Hindes gave his address as Hatter's Square (Hull). Witnesses were Thomas Fulford and Mary Ellis. David Hindes listed his father as John Hindes, however, his baptism, on 12 Jan 1817, in Ulceby, Lincolnshire, specifies he was "David, illegitimate son of Sarah Hinde".

David Hinds, who had been lodging with William and Mary Ellis in Healing, Lincolnshire in 1841, previously married Martha Corringham (bap. 27 Oct 1825), daughter of Richard Corringham, in Healing, Lincolnshire, on 2 Feb 1843

David and Martha had four children, all four baptised in Healing:
  1. Elizabeth Hinds, bap. 20 Mar 1843
  2. Richard Hinds bap. 16 Sep 1844
  3. John Weldon Hind (sic) bap. 3 Aug 1846. Died, aged 8, in 1853 S Quarter in GLANFORD BRIGG Volume 07A Page 333 and was buried in Ulceby.
  4. George Hinds, b. 1848 M Quarter in CAISTOR Volume 14 Page 335 (confirms mother's maiden name of CORRINGHAM), bap. 2 Feb 1848
Probably as a result of giving birth to the last child that Martha aged 22, wife of David Hinds, was buried, on 27 Feb 1848, in Great Coates, Lincolnshire.

Esther Ann Borrell already had a son, John Borrell, bap. 22 Apr 1849, prior to marrying David. (DNA evidence from a descendant of John Borrell confirms that David Hinds was the father. John Borrell later married Elizabeth Jane Hawken or Hawkins in Canterbury, New Zealand in 1872; the couple had seven children and John died on 12 Feb 1886 in Waimakariri, Canterbury, New Zealand.)

A second son, Thomas Hinds, was born in 1850 D Quarter in CAISTOR Volume 14 Page 325, bap. 19 Jan 1852 in North Thoresby, Lincolnshire, but died in 1852.

In 1851, David Hinds (34) Farm Labourer, born in Ulceby, Lincolnshire, was living in Old Chapel Lane, Laceby, Lincolnshire, with Ann [Esther Ann] (24), born North Thorsby, Lincolnshire; Elizabeth Hinds (8), Richard Hinds (6), Wildan (sic) [John Weldon] Hinds (4), George Hinds (3), Tom Hinds (1) - undoubtedly an error and this child is actually John Borrell (b. 1849) - and Thomas Hinds (0). Also in the household was Margaret Borrell (14), Visitor (Esther Ann's sister).

There's no record of a death of a David Hinds, however, the death of a George Hines (sic), aged 35, in 1851 D Quarter in CASTOR Volume 14 Page 193 and buried on 19 Dec 1851, in Laceby, has been suggested. Research found no George Hines (etc) of appropriate age living in the area whose death it could be, so I'm also convinced to accept it. The fact that [Esther] Ann had gone back to her home in North Thoresby, by the time of Thomas' baptism in Jan 1852, also makes me think that this death in the last quarter of 1851 must be relevant.

But as Esther was previously married to David Hinds, why was she again Borrell when she married the second time? This, I think, is unanswerable.

John and Esther Ann Paddison had two children:
  1. Ann Paddison b. 9 Nov 1855 (GRO Reference: 1855 D Quarter in LOUTH Volume 07A Page 511), bap. 6 Aug 1856 in Louth, Lincolnshire.
  2. George Paddison b. 1857 S Quarter in LOUTH Volume 07A Page 499, bap. 3 Jul 1857 in Raithby, Lincolnshire. Died aged 0 in 1857 S Quarter in LOUTH Volume 07A Page 344.
Esther Ann Paddison died, aged 30 on 4 Apr 1858 J Quarter in LOUTH Vol 07A Page 347 and was buried, on 6 Apr 1858. Lincolnshire Monumental Inscriptions (inferring that there is a stone) details that Esther Ann Paddison, wife of John Paddison was buried at St Peter's church, Raithby cum Hallington. The death of Esther Ann was also reported in the Lincoln Rutland and Stamford Mercury.

In 1861, John Paddison (26) Agricultural Labourer, Widowed, and daughter Ann (4) were living in Hallington, Lincolnshire, in the household of John's father, John Paddison (53) Shepherd, with his step-mother, Maria and brother, Joseph. John Borrell (11), was living in North Thoresby, with his maternal grandparents.

John Paddison remarried, on 9 Aug 1862, to Mary Ann Maplethorpe. This marriage too was announced in the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury.

John and Mary Ann Paddison added another eight children:
  1. John Paddison b. 1863 M Quarter in LOUTH Volume 07A Page 557
  2. Anne Maria Paddison b. 1864 D Quarter in LOUTH  Volume 07A  Page 537, died, aged 1, in 1866 J Quarter in LOUTH Volume 07A  Page 367 and was buried in Raithby cum Hallington, Lincolnshire.
  3. William Paddison b. 1866 J Quarter in LOUTH Volume 07A Page 574
  4. George Paddison b. 1869 M Quarter in LOUTH  Volume 07A  Page 588
  5. Thomas Paddison bap. 6 Nov 1870 in Tathwell, Lincolnshire.
  6. Hannah Maria Paddison bap. 4 July 1872 and buried 9 July 1872 in Stainton le Vale, Lincolnshire
  7. Eliza Paddison b. 1875 J Quarter in SPILSBY  Volume 07A  Page 548
  8. Joseph Paddison b. 1877 S Quarter in SPILSBY Volume 07A Page 573
In 1871, at Tathwell Cottage, Tathwell were John Paddison (36) Shepherd, Mary Paddison (28), John Paddison (8), William Paddison (5), George Paddison (2) and Thomas Paddison (5 mo) and John Whitworth (22) Lodger, Ag Lab.

In 1881, John Paddison (44) Shepherd, was living in Thornton, Horncastle, Lincolnshire with wife Mary Ann Paddison (38), William Paddison (14), George Paddison (12), Eliza Paddison (5) and Joseph Paddison (3). Living with them was Robert Greenfield (25) Lodger. Eldest son John Paddison (18) was staying in the household of his grandfather, John Paddison (74) in Hallington, Louth.

In 1891, John Paddison (56) Dock Labourer, was living in Walcott Street, Hull (the next street, parallel to Wassand Street where several of the Tummon family lived), with wife Mary A Paddison (49); John Paddison (29) Labourer Fram Company; William Paddison (25) Labourer Dock Co; Thomas Paddison (19) Grocers Assistant; Eliza Paddison (16) Shop Assistant; Joseph Paddison (14) Scholar; Henry Jackson (28) Lodger, Dock Labourer and Jesse Stocks (2) Granddaughter.

Mary Ann Paddison (49) died and was buried on 17 Sep 1891 at Hull Holy Trinity.

In 1901, John Paddison (66) Grocer Shop Keeper, Widowed, was living at 73 Walcott Street, Hull, with Frances Walker (44), Widow, Housekeeper.

John Paddison died aged 73 in 1908 and was also buried at Hull Holy Trinity.

George Borrell and Ann Corden

George Borrell (20), with consent of parents (not identified) and Ann Corden (21) (bap. 5 Jan 1756 in Grainsby, Lincolnshire), daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Corden, both of this parish, married by Licence, at St Nicholas Church, Grainsby, Lincolnshire on 19 Aug 1778. Witnesses were Ann Scrivener & William Brown.

George and Ann had at least eight children, all baptised in Grainsby:
  1. John Burwell (sic) bap. 26 Oct 1780. Buried 26 Jun 1804.
  2. Mary Borrill (sic) bap. 23 Feb 1785. Buried 17 Apr 1785.
  3. Ann Borrill (sic) bap. 21 Apr 1786. Buried 10 Sep 1805.
  4. Mary Borril (sic) bap. 19 Sep 1788. Buried 4 Oct 1789.
  5. Eleanor Borrell bap. 16 Aug 1790
  6. George Borrell bap. 8 Dec 1792
  7. Sarah Borrill (sic) bap. 25 Dec 1794
  8. Margaret Mary Hannah Burrell (sic) bap. 26 Jan 1800
Eleanor Borrell married William Johnson, in North Thoresby, on 12 Jan 1815.

Sarah Borrell married John Smith, in North Thoresby, on 15 May 1817.

The George Borrell, born in 1758, was buried, in Grainsby, in 1826.

(Note: there are various burials of a George Borrell in 1825, 1826 and in 1827 in Grainsby. Certainly more deaths than there are baptism records available for, so it would be unwise to attribute any particular one just because it's there.)

In 1841, Ann Burwell (sic) age estimated to 80, was living in Tetney, Lincolnshire, in the household of John and Margaret Haith. John Haith, Batchelor, Blacksmith, son of William Haith (also living with them), had married Margaret Borrell, Spinster, daughter of George Borrell, in Old Clee, Lincolnshire, on 4 Feb 1841. Margaret's marriage certificate reveals that her father's occupation had been Labourer.

Ann Borrill (sic) died, aged 87, in 1844 S Quarter in LOUTH UNION Volume 14 Page 275, and was buried on 29 Jul 1844 in Grainsby, Lincolnshire.

Grainsby Hall Lincolnshire

Seeing the existence of this estate, it merely occurred to me that it would provide ample work for the residents of the village, but then read that, "In the 18th century Grainsby Hall was owned by the Nettleship-family. Francis Nettleship, who was the last member of the family, died in 1797. He left most of his property to his servant Elizabeth Borrell, who already owned land and the mansion house. When she died in 1826, the property was inherited by her niece Elizabeth Charlotte Borrell, who married William Haigh of Halifax in 1827." [Source]

"Francis left the estate to his servant Elizabeth Borrell who had actually bought the house and 313 acres for £5,800 in 1795 before his death. Elizabeth in turn left the estate to her great niece Elizabeth Charlotte who married a Yorkshire land owner William Haigh of Norland, Halifax in 1827 ..." [Grainsby Hall Lincolnshire]

The Elizabeth Borrell who died in 1826, was buried, on 8 Sep 1826, in the nearby hamlet of Waithe, Lincolnshire (as was Francis Nettleship). Her age given as 84, her year of birth was estimated to 1742. Unfortunately, we don't know if she was a Miss or Mrs Borrell and her birth is too early for currently available records.

Of course, the other questions that instantly arise are, a) where does a servant get £5,800 in 1795 (Close to a million GB£ today). And, b) exactly what service had she rendered to her master to become such a favoured beneficiary?

(There were no illegitimate children born to Elizabeth Borrell.)

Elizabeth Charlotte Borrell did indeed marry William Haigh from Halifax, in Grainsby, on 9 Jan 1827. Elizabeth Charlotte Borrell (bap. 12 May 1805, in Grainsby), was the daughter of Benjamin and Eliza Lyonella Borrell. And in turn, Benjamin Borrell had married Eliza Lionella Charlotte Caton on 11 Jun 1804, also in Grainsby. Benjamin Borrell, who had died, aged 38 and was buried, also in Waithe, on 28 Nov 1822, had been baptised, in Waithe, on 8 Aug 1784, the son of John and Hannah Burril (sic). John Burrell (sic) (b. 1754) had married Hannah Basnip (née Hawkney), Widow (b. 1748), on 13 Feb 1781, in Waithe. How Elizabeth Borrell (1742-1826) is related to them or the rest of the Borrell family, however - they are of ages where Elizabeth, John and George could be siblings, but there are no records this far back to confirm - is still very much a mystery (although, in such small, rural communities, it would be difficult to believe they were not.)

Alfred Sawyer and Emma Rebecca Lee

Grave marker for Alfred and Emma Rebecca Sawyer 'Reunited'

Alfred Sawyer (b. 1877), son of William Arthur Sawyer and Ruth Swift, married Emma Rebecca Lee (b. 15 Nov 1867, bap. 27 Jan 1868 at Holy Trinity Church), daughter of George Lee and Emma Waugh, at St. Paul's Church, Hull, on 16 Aug 1909. Despite being ten years older than her husband, this was the first marriage for both of them. Both gave their address as 70 Brunswick Ave, Hull.

Marrying late, it is no surprise that the couple did not have any children.

Sawyer was at work up to noon on Tuesday when he complained to the manager of severe pains in his body. He was sent home in a private car and became worse, and died before the arrival of a doctor."

George Walton and Mary Hardcastle

Church of St Mary, Scarborough, North Yorkshire
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Graham Hogg - geograph.org.uk/p/6571853

George Walton, the eldest son of John Walton and Betty Oliver, married Mary Hardcastle, daughter of Joseph Hardcastle and Sarah Hudson, on 11 Aug 1845 at St Mary's Church, Scarborough and one imagines they chose to marry away from home because of the imminent arrival of their first child. Witnesses to the marriage were William Whipps and Jane Potter, who do not seem to be relatives. On the certificate, Mary's father is listed as a Farmer. When she was living at home, aged 15, in 1841, Joseph Hardcastle was a Publican in Town Street, Old Malton - The Royal Oak and The Wentworth Arms still exist on that street and it could have been one of these he held. The family later moved to farm in Kirby Misperton

On all subsequent census returns, Mary's birthplace was listed as Kirby Misperton, but she was baptised on 14 Mar 1824, and presumably born, in Old Malton.

George and Mary Walton had ten children:
  1. Joseph Bryan Walton b. 1845 D Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 24 Page 455, bap. 4 Jan 1846 at St. Laurence's ChurchKirby Misperton
  2. John Walton b. 1848 M Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 24 Page 445, bap. 5 Mar 1848 at St. Laurence's ChurchKirby Misperton. Died on 28 Oct 1849 in Kirby Misperton, which is presumably where the infant was buried.
  3. Hannah Hardcastle Walton b. 1849 D Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 24 Page 497, bap. 23 Dec 1849 in Kirby Misperton.
  4. Elizabeth Walton b. 1851 S Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 24 Page 571, bap. 24 Aug 1851 in Kirby Misperton.
  5. Charles John Walton b. 1853 J Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 09D Page 357, bap. 22 May 1853 in Kirby Misperton.
  6. Sarah Walton b. 1856 M Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 09D Page 357, bap. 30 Mar 1856 in Kirby Misperton. Died, aged 1, in 1857 S Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 09D  Page 277
  7. Ann Walton b. 1857 D Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 09D Page 355, bap. Annie Walton on 14 Nov 1857 in Kirby Misperton.
  8. Unnamed female Walton b. 1860 J Quarter in PICKERING UNION Volume 09D Page 372.
  9. Hudson Walton b. 1863 D Quarter in PICKERING Volume 09D Page 383
  10. Mary Helen Walton b. 3 Aug 1866 S Quarter in STOCKTON Volume 10A Page 58, bap. Mary Ellen Walton on 18 Oct 1866 at St Johns Church, Middlesbrough.
The mother's maiden name on all the GRO birth registrations is HARDCASTLE.

In 1851, at Rectory House, Pickering, Yorkshire, were George Walton (25) Blacksmith with Mary Walton (27), James Ward (19) Apprentice Blacksmith; Ann Mercer (12) General Servant; Joseph Walton (5) and Hannah Walton (1).

In 1861, living on the Malton Road, Pickering, Yorkshire, were George Walton (34) Blacksmith, Mary Walton (36), Hannah Walton (11), Elizabeth Walton (9), Charles Walton (7), Ann Walton (3) and Panby Wildon (5) Boarder. Joseph Bryan Walton (15) was a House Servant in the large household of Charles Long (58) Widower at The Rectory, Village, Settrington, Malton.

In 1871, the family were living at 68 Vaughan Street, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Yorkshire with George Walton (42) Millwright, Mary Walton (46), Charles Walton (17) Millwright; Elizabeth Walton (19), Annie Walton (13), Hudson Walton (6), Helen Walton (4), Samuel H Tarpin (33) Lodger and Christopher Slater (40) Lodger. Hannah Hardcastle Walton may have married.

In 1881, still at 68, High Vaughan Street, Middlesbrough, were George Walton (54) Millwright, Mary Walton (56), Hudson Walton (17), Mary E Walton (14), George H Walton (13) Grandson and James Hood (18) Boarder.

There are two deaths of a George Walton which could relate: George Walton aged 62, who was buried on 29 May 1888 at New Linthorpe Cemetery and George Walton aged 61, buried on 29 May 1890, also at New Linthorpe Cemetery. Given it was the same date, different years, I'd have wondered if this was the same record, but there are GRO death registrations for both years also.

As yet, I haven't been able to find the record of Mary's death, but she may have gone to live with one of the children and could be in a different location.

Thomas Midgley Grayburn and Sophia Alice Hatcliffe Tummon

St Mary's, Lowgate, Hull
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Ian S - geograph.org.uk/p/3544403

Thomas Midgley Grayburn (b. 1826), son of William Midgley Grayburn and Elizabeth [maiden name unknown], married Sophia Alice Hatcliffe Tummon (b. 1836), daughter of Joseph Tummon and Jane Hatcliffe and elder sister of William Henry Tummon and Thomas Tummon, at St Mary's Church, Hull also known as Lowgate St Mary, on 8 Aug 1858. Both bride and groom gave their address as 9 Manor Street, Hull. Both Thomas and his father, William's occupation is listed as tinner (tin plate worker) and the late Joseph Tummon, this time had been upgraded to farmer from agricultural labourer. Witnesses to the marriage were the bride's brother, William Henry Tummon and an Ann Stephenson.

Although born around 1826, Thomas Midgley Grayburn was baptised, on 26 Feb 1837, at Holy Trinity Church. His sisters, Eliza and Mary Ann, were baptised at the same time and all three were listed as the children of William Grayburn, a Tin Plate Worker, and his wife Elizabeth, then living in Edgar Street, Hull. These 'catch up' baptisms in 1837 are not unusual and one imagines the church offered a discount ahead of the introduction of civil registration that year, probably fearing, rightly as it turned out, that people would stop baptising their children once they had that option. Indeed, Sarah Ann Greyburn, who later married Asher Swift, was also baptised along with several siblings, at Hull Holy Trinity in 1837.

(What relation - I don't imagine they're not - Sarah Ann Greyburn is to Thomas Midgley Grayburn, records don't go back far enough to determine.)

In 1841, Thomas Grayburn (15), was living in Edgar Street, Holy Trinity, Kingston upon Hull, with his parents William and Elizabeth and siblings, Maria (8) and William (2). And in 1851, Thomas M Grayburn (23), Tinner journeyman, was still living in his parents' home, this time at 8, Duncans Place, St Mary, Hull. His father, William M Grayburn (53) listed also as a Tinner journeyman, from Cottingham.

There do not appear to have been any children born to this couple. There was a Sarah Emma Grayburn born in 1859 and died in 1860, but because she falls between the cracks and misses any census and because her birth record does not come up in the GRO, her mother's maiden name cannot be confirmed and she cannot therefore be attributed to this (or any other) Grayburn family.

Sophia Alice Greyburn, wife of Thomas Midgley Grayburn, of 3 Winter's Alley, Manor Street, died, aged 32, on 12 Sep 1868 from 'Consumption and Disease of the Lungs' (Tuberculosis) and buried on 15 Sep 1868 at Hull General Cemetery.

In 1871, the widowed Thomas Grayburn (46) was a boarder in the household of his brother-in-law, William Henry Tummon, at Broadley Street, St Mary, Hull.

However, in 1881, Thomas Midgley Grayburn, listed, wrongly, as only 49, Journeyman tinner, was living in Providence Place, Trippett Street, Kingston upon Hull with a wife, Jane and daughter, Jane Grayburn (6). Born Jane Elizabeth Midgley Grayburn in 1875 (J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 252), this child's mother's maiden name is listed as Wilkinson. Also in the household was Charlotte Trolly (19), single, Worker at lead works, listed as daughter-in-law - but this is often used when meaning step-daughter - and a grandson, Thomas Trolly (0).

There are no birth records of Charlotte Trolly or Thomas Trolly, nor marriage between a Wilkinson (or anyone) and a Trolly. I've also found no records of any other marriage for any Grayburn to any Jane, or any Wilkinson, or Trolly (or any other variation I can think of thereof). Nevertheless, there is a record of the death of a Jane Grayburn, aged 52, in 1885 J Quarter in HULL Volume 09D Page 154.

[So far] I've been unable to find any further records for Jane Elizabeth Midgley Grayburn after the 1881 census, neither can I find any further records for Thomas Midgley Grayburn, not even his death. Nobody left to register it, I'd guess.

Presumed step-daughter, Charlotte Trolly, married Jack Braithwaite in the second quarter of 1881. Listed as John Jnr Braithwaite (21), from Knottingley, Yorkshire, he was listed as Mate of the 'Alice' (a ship) to his father, John Braithwaite (53) Master (of said vessel) in 1881. In 1891, Charlotte Braithwaite (29) married, Black lead packer, was living in Trippett Street, with John Braithwaite (10) (could this be Thomas Trolly renamed for his putative father?), Henry Braithwaite (7) and Mary Ann Munns (68) Boarder. Jack, presumably was on board ship somewhere.

In 1911, John Braithwaite (49) was listed as Lighterman mate at Recketts Wharfe, Stone Ferry, Sculcoates (see: Lightermen in Hull), while Charlotte Braithwaite (50), living at 9 Kent Street, Hull was Forewoman black lead manufactory.

In 1921, Charlotte Braithwaite (60) was at 25 Kent St, Holderness Rd, Hull, in the household of son Henry Braithwaite (37).

John Braithwaite died, aged 64, in 1925.

In 1939, Charlotte Braithwaite (b. 10 Feb 1862), widow, was living in the household of her younger son, Henry Braithwaite, at 28 James Reckitt Avenue, Kingston Upon Hull. Charlotte Braithwaite died, aged 78, in 1940.
